Project Goals: United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM) Violence Prevention Initiative uses its great and varied collaborative knowledge and strong neighborhood relationships to promote safer communities through the “Building Me” and ‘Say It Straight” curricula. UNCOM staff bring together parents and youth from each of the eight UNCOM agencies to provide them with skills and knowledge that build on strengths for increasing capacity and affecting positive change to promotes the reduction and prevention of violence.

    • Collaborated with the “Summer of Peace Rally” held at North Division High School on July 29, 2011
    • Participated in planning for MPD Back to School Bash, Summer of Peace and the Governor’s Juvenile Justice Commission
    • Conducted Say It Straight trainings and gang workshops for member agencies and interested community members
    • Conducted two Safe-Night Out violence prevention talks with youth at Kosciuszko Community Center and one at COA Skyline Music Series
    • Hosted annual Walk for Wellness at Silver Spring Neighborhood Center’s new West Lawn Housing Development
    • Conducted violence prevention tips and trainings with member agencies and community members in collaboration with Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and Milwaukee Police Department (MPD)
    • Conducted two gang workshops and seven violence prevention talks at three sites
    • Presented information about VPI to numerous stakeholders including various State of Wisconsin departments, the Governor's Juvenile Justice Commission meetings, four MPS schools, and three churches in the Clarke Square Neighborhood
    • Co-facilitated a Parent Mentor Training with MPS and MPD focused on restorative justice circles
    • Conducted workshops in the Clarke Square and Lindsay Heights Neighborhoods about public safety issues
    • Conducted ongoing violence prevention talks at UNCOM sites
    • Disseminated VPI information at three separate community events
    • Conducted community outreach through community walks, 17 in-home community well-being support meetings for youth and adults and clothing and food drives
