In the Early Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes project, researchers discovered a set of genes that, when activated, show that inflammation is harming the pancreas. This inflammation, which evades other tests and has historically gone undetected, precedes a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. The “genetic fingerprint” uncovered in this project is often visible to researchers years before the patient experiences symptoms.
