Commencement nuggets

Commencement was held for graduates of The Medical College of Wisconsin on May 20, 2011, at the Milwaukee Theatre. A total of 275 degrees were awarded to students of the Medical School and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, consisting of 206 MD, 21 PhD, 25 MS, 12 MA, and 11 MPH degrees.

The commencement address was delivered by Allan H. “Bud” Selig, the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, who spoke about his Milwaukee roots and the strength of the Medical College in the community. He also received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree.

The College also honored three community leaders and philanthropists with Doctor of Humanities degrees:

Ted and Mary Kellner are both highly regarded in the Milwaukee community for their extensive public service and generosity. Mr. Kellner is the founder and Executive Chairman of Fiduciary Management, Inc., and founding partner of Fiduciary Real Estate Development, Inc. He has been a Medical College trustee since 2005. Mrs. Kellner is President of the Kelben Foundation.

Bryon Riesch is the President of the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation, which recently established establish the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation Research Laboratories at the Medical College to advance spinal cord injury research.

Three outstanding staff/faculty members, including one alumna, received Distinguished Service Awards, the College’s highest honor.

Douglas R. Campbell joined the Medical College in 1992 as Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration, serving in that capacity for 18 years. For nearly two decades, Mr. Campbell has managed the business operations and maintained the financial integrity of the Medical College during a period of great institutional growth and challenging national economics.

Hubert V. Forster, PhD, is Professor of Physiology and has been a Medical College of Wisconsin faculty member since 1972. Dr. Forster is an internationally recognized expert on the neural regulation of breathing. For more than 30 years, he has directed the Graduate Program in Physiology in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. In 1983, Dr. Forster started the Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR), which provides undergraduate students with hands-on research experience in a Medical College lab as a means of kindling interest in scientific careers.

Cecilia J. Hillard, PhD ’83, is Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at The Medical College of Wisconsin, and was appointed last year as the Founding Director of the College’s Neuroscience Research Center. Since joining the faculty in 1985, Dr. Hillard has conducted essential research on the effects and mechanisms of cannabinoids, nicotine and other drugs of abuse. Dr. Hillard was the Founding Director of the neuroscience PhD program and helped design curricula in the neurosciences and pharmacology.

Several faculty members were presented with teaching awards during 2011 commencement activities. Dr. Hillard was among them, receiving the Graduate Student Award for Outstanding Mentor.

Carol L. Williams, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology received the Graduate Student Award for Outstanding Teacher.

Rachel Adams Greenup, MD ’04, GME ’11, in the Department of Surgery,  and Wendy E. Schumacher, DO, in the Department of Dermatology, each received MCWAH Housestaff Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

Jonathan H. Berkoff, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, received the Milwaukee Academy of Medicine Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Hershel Raff, PhD, Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology), received the Harry Beckman Basic Science Teaching Award.

José Franco, MD ’90, GME ’95, Fel ’95, Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology and Hepatology) received the Ernest O. Henschel Clinical Teaching Award.

Two Graduate School students received Friends of MCW Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation Awards. Tracy Berg in Pharmacology and Toxicology was honored for the dissertation, “Identification of SmgGDS Isoforms as Novel Regulators of Small GTPase Prenylation and Localization: Potential New Therapeutic Targets in Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma.” Jamie Rae Privratsky in Pharmacology and Toxicology was honored for the dissertation, “PECAM-1: A multifunctional Adhesion Molecule In Inflammation.”
