Medical College of Wisconsin Names Dr. Joseph Kerschner as Interim Dean

Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, FAAP, FACSJan. 21, 2011 College News - Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, has been named Interim Dean and Executive Vice President of The Medical College of Wisconsin. His appointment was approved by the MCW Board of Trustees today, and announced by John R. Raymond, Sr., MD, President and CEO.

Dr. Kerschner will serve as the Medical College’s senior officer overseeing medical education, research, patient care, and public and community health until the permanent appointment of a new Dean following a national search.

Dr. Kerschner is currently CEO of Children’s Specialty Group, a pediatric specialty group practice that is a joint venture of The Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. The Children’s Specialty Group represents 345 pediatric specialist physicians and 153 nurse practitioners and physician assistants. He is also the Medical College’s Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs – Children’s Specialty Group, and Interim Chairman and Professor of Otolaryngology and Communication Science.

“Joe Kerschner is an effective leader with an impressive depth of knowledge and experience in all of the missions of The Medical College of Wisconsin,” said Dr. Raymond. “An alumnus of our medical school, he is an experienced clinician, teacher and scholar with proven leadership abilities that have advanced both the Children’s Specialty Group and the Medical College’s Department of Otolaryngology and Communication Science.”

“I am humbled by the opportunity to help lead one of Wisconsin’s finest institutions,” said Dr. Kerschner. “These are exciting times for The Medical College of Wisconsin with opportunities to take great strides in each of the College’s missions of education, discovery, clinical care and community health. I look forward to working with great energy to assist Dr. Raymond and our outstanding faculty, students and staff to produce excellence in each of these areas.”

A board-certified otolaryngologist, Dr. Kerschner has served on the Medical College’s faculty since 1998. As a physician at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, his clinical focus is on otitis media (ear infections), airway reconstruction in infants and children, and congenital head and neck masses and neoplasms. His research interests include identifying the genetic causes and potential new treatments for pediatric ear infections.

Dr. Kerschner is a Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has served on several scientific review panels for the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, and is a recipient of NIH research grants. He has published or presented more than 100 articles, book chapters, reviews, and abstracts in professional journals or at scientific meetings.

Since 2004, Dr. Kerschner has been consistently named by his peers for inclusion in the Best Doctors in America.

After receiving his MD degree from The Medical College of Wisconsin in 1990, Dr. Kerschner completed a residency in otolaryngology at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He returned to the Medical College to complete a fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology.

Seems like a winner is already on board. Why look beyond when such a qualified individual is already familiar with the problems and working well. jla
