Combined Internal Medicine-Anesthesia Residency Program
The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) foresees an increased demand for perioperative care physicians in areas such as the preoperative admission testing (PAT) clinics, in sedation units (OOR procedures), in post-operative care units (PACU), and as hospitalists.
The Medical College of Wisconsin is one of only four programs in the United States to offer a combined residency program of Internal Medicine and Anesthesia, and MCW is the first accredited Midwest training program. MCW’s program will educate residents to become competent internists and anesthesiologists capable of professional activity in either discipline. See a Sample Schedule.
Upon completion of the 5-year program, residents will be eligible for certification in both Internal Medicine and Anesthesia. These residents will have the opportunity to proceed directly into a perioperative care career or to choose fellowship training for an additional year in critical care, pain medicine, administration, or other academic pursuit.
Applications are being accepted through ERAS. Please see How To Apply for all information and requirements for this program. However, for the Combined Internal Medicine-Anesthesial Residency Program you will need four letters of recommendations; two being from internal medicine and two from anesthesia. Please see Employment Terms/Conditions/Benefits. Additional information for the Combined Program can be found at the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Please contact Amy Matenaer, Program Coordinator, or Dr. Herodotos Ellinas, Program Director, with any additional questions.
Dr. Ellinas' Biography and Vision for the Combined Program
After completing my residency in internal medicine/pediatrics at Duke University, I provided primary care services in both rural and urban areas for nearly a decade (1996-2005). I then completed another residency in anesthesiology at The Medical College of Wisconsin, in 2008, and a Fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Children's Hospital of Boston, Harvard Medical School in 2009. I returned to The Medical College of Wisconsin to assume a faculty position in the Anesthesiology department with clinical duties spanning both the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital. In 2013, I became both the PGY-1 Program Director and the Program Director of Internal Medicine-Anesthesiology Integrated Combined Program, Residency Training, one of only four in the United States and the only Midwest training program.
My vision is to attract high caliber medical students and funnel them into academic medicine, critical care, quality assurance/safety and hospitalist positions desperately needed in our country.
