Drs. Jenifer Coburn and Thomas Zahrt named to leadership roles

July 30, 2014 College News - We are pleased to announce that Jenifer Coburn, PhD, Professor of Medicine (Infectious Disease) and Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, has been named Director for the Center for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR).  Additionally, Thomas Zahrt, PhD, Associate Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, has been named Director of the Biology Safety Level III (BSL3) facility.

In her new role, Dr. Coburn will work with institutional leaders to advocate for infectious disease research and build an infectious disease research community that spans the Departments of Microbiology, Medicine and Pediatrics – as well as other interested groups across campus and beyond.  Additionally, Dr. Coburn will organize educational and engagement opportunities to foster connectivity to the infectious disease research community and help create a strategy for the development of research programs in infectious disease.

In his new role, Dr. Zahrt will exercise general responsibility and oversight for the BSL3 and Animal Biosafety Level III (ABSL3) laboratories, work closely with Biomedical Resource Center (BRC) leadership in implementing ABSL3 operations, ensure that MCW is meeting the requirements to work safely with infectious agents, and ensure regulatory compliance with state and federal standards and with MCW policies.

We also wish to extend our deep appreciation to Dara Frank, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, for her contributions and leadership during the past decade as Founding Director of the CIDR. (Original source MCW college news)
