MCW Investigator Develops a Novel Technology to Restore Heart Function following a Heart Attack

Heart disease is the number one killer in the world. Heart failure, primarily due to the loss or an inadequate number of functional muscle cells, remains the leading discharge diagnosis of hospitalized patients over the age of 65 and has an overall mortality rate of 50%. Heart attack (Acute Myocardial Infarction) is a leading cause of heart failure with 610,000 new attacks and 325,000 recurrent attacks occurring annually.
