Monika Casey
Research Associate II
Dr. Dara Frank Laboratory

Degree - B.S. in Medical Technology

At MCW since 1983

What brought you to MCW?
My first job was temporary.  I was hired to assist with the laboratory section of the Medical Microbiology course for 2nd year Medical Students.  I was hired as a permanent, full-time employee for Dr. Sidney Grossberg, Chairman of the Department of Microbiology at the time, and for Dr. Jerry Lynn Taylor, Associate Professor.

What are you working on now?
I'm in Dr. Frank's lab and am currently working with Dr. Tami Maier, postdoctoral fellow, on genetic studies of pathogenicity of Francisella tularensis and transmission of infection from ticks to mice.  I also help Dr. Frank manage CIDR and the BSL3.  I've learned a variety of essential laboratory techniques during my time with Dr. Frank, especially in molecular biology, protein chemistry, and microscopy.

What is your favorite thing about your position?
I interact with many people and stay abreast of new technologies.  I'm never bored!  I'm currently learning to operate the Genetic QP Expression robot for picking colonies from large cloning libraries into other formats for downstream applications.

Hobbies and outside of work interests?
I'm learning to ride horses according to the French classical method of dressage.  I own my horse Rocco and am currently teaching him the Spanish Walk.

Interesting "Fun Fact"?
I grew up in a German-speaking home and speak German with a Viennese (Austrian) dialect, although my lack of practice has left me at a 4th grade level, so I am definitely not smarter than a 5th Grader!
