College Program

StEP-UP College Program

Curriculum

Undergraduate students in StEP-UP move through the program in a supportive cohort that supplements their pre-medicine and biomedical studies through each year of college. Students will get opportunities to work with MCW faculty and medical and graduate students.

SCIENCE SATURDAY DATES

StEP-UP consists of six Science Saturdays throughout each academic year. Students can apply at any time throughout their time in college, but most will be admitted at the beginning of their first year in college.

  • October 13, 2018
  • November 10, 2018
  • January 26, 2019
  • February 16, 2019
  • March 9, 2019
  • April 13, 2019

While the StEP-UP program is designed to supplement each year of a student’s college career, we understand that not all students graduate in four years or go directly into their medical or graduate studies after college. Students will still be able to participate, even if they do not follow the traditional four-year college path.

College Program

YEAR ONE (FRESHMEN YEAR): BUILDING A PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE

Build your study skills, especially around biology, chemistry, and math, in addition to participating in scholarly conversations and activities. You will also learn about different communication styles, personal branding, work/life balance, and how to financially prepare for medical or graduate school and beyond.

YEAR TWO (SOPHOMORE YEAR): CLINICAL AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Explore different fields in medicine, research, and health sciences and partake in opportunities to shadow students and faculty in clinic and lab settings. You will also be introduced to the MCAT and GRE.

YEAR THREE (JUNIOR YEAR): APPLICATION PREPARATION

Focus on putting together a strong application for medical or graduate school admission. Dive deeper into the MCAT or GRE and learn more about the application process. Support will also be available to help you with your resume/CV and developing your personal statement.

YEAR FOUR (SENIOR YEAR AND/OR GAP YEAR): PREPARING FOR THE NEXT STEP

Opportunities for volunteering and shadowing will continue to be available to you. Participate in interview practice and prepare for the transition between undergraduate to medical or graduate school.
