  • Ansoft High-Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) running on a Compaq computer with dual 1.7 GHz processors with 1 GB of memory, permitting objective (rather than intuitive) design of loop-gap resonator coils and cavities, and is useful for modeling RF field distributions
  • Ansoft Maxwell 3D, a field simulator that uses finite-element analysis to solve electromagnetic problems; it is run on the same computer as Ansoft HFSS

The Department of Biophysics, which houses the National Biomedical EPR Center, occupies the ground level of the MACC Fund Research Center (MFRC). Approximately 20,000 square feet (gross) are available. The space includes chemical, biochemical, and two tissue culture labs, an engineering complex, a microwave lab, six EPR spectroscopy labs, and a machine shop.

The Free Radical Research Center (FRRC) is located in the Medical College of Wisconsin's Medical Education Building (MEB) and occupies 1,100 square feet of laboratory space, plus an additional 200 square feet of office and library space. The MEB and MFRC are connected by a skywalk.


The Medical College of Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex are all located adjacent to each other on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center (MRMC) campus.


The Department of Biophysics is supported by its own TCP/IP subnet with all 255 addresses available to Biophysics. The infrastructure is CAT6 wiring to desktop and dual fiber leaving the department. Windows users share printers and files on a COMPAQ ProLiant dual-processor server running Windows 2000 Server software with 100 user licenses. All offices, every spectrometer location, each lab, and the shop areas have CAT6 connections. The Windows 2000 server is backed up by the same systems that do backups for fMRI data. Each of the Bruker ELEXSYS systems, as well as the LINUX box running the XSophe simulation software, are additionally running SAMBA, a file server that is interoperable with Windows. This allows users access to their spectrometer data on their own Windows desktop computer.


The Department of Biophysics has 26 enclosed offices for faculty and staff and 12 study carrels for visitors. An extensive collection of books and periodicals is maintained in the department.


A well-equipped machine shop with two numerically controlled mills, both with four-axis capability, two manually controlled mills, two full size lathes, a numerically controlled lathe, a jeweler's lathe and mill, as well as supplementary precision instruments is located in the Department of Biophysics and staffed by a full-time machinist with 30 years of experience. An electronics shop is maintained with three graduate electrical engineers, an electronics technician, and two part-time electrical engineers. Included is a computer with circuit board design software for layout of circuit designs. A synthetic chemistry lab and wet chemistry-biochemistry preparative labs with normal equipment, vacuum lines, glass blowing bench, and cold room are available. A full-time organic chemist is employed.
