Medical College of Wisconsin Emergency Medicine Residency Program Rotation in Toxicology

Pill bottlesA rotation in toxicology offers emergency medicine residents an opportunity to become versed in all aspects of adult and pediatric injuries and illnesses caused by intentional and/or accidental poisonings. Residents treat drug overdoses, suicide attempts, environmental and occupational hazards, plant and animal toxins, and potentially bioterrorism. The skills and knowledge acquired in this rotation are pertinent to the EM board examination.

We learn from the best. Four faculty members are board-certified toxicologists, a rare distinction in the nation. In addition to didactic training and research, residents complete bedside toxicology consults at Froedtert and Children's Hospitals.

ln addition, residents have exposure to the Wisconsin Poison Center. The Wisconsin Poison Center, provides 24-hour, toll-free poison information for all individuals in Wisconsin. The Poison Center was awarded national recertification by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. The AAPCC is the nationwide organization that sets standards and acts as the data repository for poison centers across the country.
