GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE (GMEC)
The Graduate Medical Education Committee, comprised of program directors, a program coordinator representative and senior administrators from the major affiliates, meets monthly to consider matters common to all programs to foster interdisciplinary cooperation and to coordinate graduate medical education at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Five housestaff, nominated by their peers, also serve on the Committee.
The Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) has oversight responsibility for: the quality of education and the work environment; communication with housestaff and medical staff; supervision; duty hour compliance; curriculum and evaluation; recommendations for stipends and benefits; selection, evaluation, promotion, transfer, discipline, and/or dismissal of housestaff; program accreditation; institutional accreditation; program changes; experimentation and innovation; reductions and closures; and vendor interactions.
Voting members on GMEC include the DIO, training program directors, the housestaff, the program coordinator representative and representatives from MCWAH’s affiliated hospitals. Non-voting members may include members of the faculty, GME administrators and other members as determined by the GMEC.
With the exception of housestaff, if on occasion a voting member is unable to attend a GMEC meeting, s/he may request a substitute to attend the meeting. Substitutes for program directors should be the associate program or another faculty member and substitutes for the program coordinator should be another program coordinator. Housestaff may not be represented by a substitute. Members from the affiliate hospital may also select an appropriate substitute. Substitutes, as described above, shall be able to vote on matters presented to the GMEC at the meeting.
This policy was approved by the MCWAH Graduate Medical Education Council on July 18, 2011.
