Transfer of Credit
Students wishing to transfer credit earned prior to admission to a degree-seeking program, including credits earned previously while enrolled at the Medical College, must file an application for transfer of credit with the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences during their first semester of enrollment as a degree seeker at the Medical College. This application is available in the Graduate School office. An official transcript of the course work listed on the transfer of credit application must be sent from the transfer institution directly to the Dean of the Graduate School. Also syllabi from the transfer courses listing textbooks and other materials used in the course must be submitted with the transfer credit application. Students will be notified in writing by the Graduate School of credits that have been accepted for transfer.
No credits may be transferred into a certificate program from another institution. A maximum of six approved credits taken at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) as a non-degree seeker may be transferred to the certificate program.
Transfer of appropriate credits from a certificate program into a degree program is automatic if matriculation in the degree program occurs within one year of completion of the certificate program. If the certificate was earned more than one year before matriculation in a degree program, then appropriate credits may be transferred if approved by both the Program Director and the Dean of the Graduate School. In general, credits will not be transferred for courses completed more than three years before matriculation in a degree program.
The maximum number of graduate credits that may be considered for transfer to a Medical College Graduate School master’s degree program is the larger of either 10 credits or one-third of the total number of graduate credits required for the MA, MS, or MPH degree program. This total includes coursework taken prior to admission and any subsequent graduate study at other institutions. Credits applied to the awarding of one degree are not transferable or applicable to a second degree program, however course content mastery may lead to the opportunity for alternate course selection.
The maximum number of graduate credits that may be considered for transfer to a Medical College Graduate School doctoral program (PhD) is 20 credits. This total includes coursework taken prior to admission and any subsequent graduate study at other institutions.
