Department: Biophysics

"My graduate advisor was very supportive giving me enough direction, but also room to think for myself.

After finishing my undergraduate work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), I came to work at The Medical College of Wisconsin as a technician in the Biophysics Department. My plan was to use the experience to go into pharmaceutical research, but my life changed course the day the Chairman of the Biophysics Department pulled me from the hallway and encouraged me to apply to his graduate program. Obviously, I made the decision to apply to the MCW Graduate Program. My graduate advisor, Dr. Jimmy Feix, was very supportive, giving me enough direction but also room to think for myself.

As it turned out, I enjoyed the experience so much that I decided to remain in academia. Upon graduation I was offered a postdoctoral fellowship position at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA School of Medicine. A few years later, it came time to seek a faculty position and I was drawn back to The Medical College of Wisconsin, the Department of Biophysics, and the National Biomedical EPR Center.

I've been on the faculty for nearly ten years now; as I look back, I am very grateful for the change in direction. If I had ended up in the pharmaceutical industry, I would not have experienced the incredible rewards of doing independent research and training 21st century students."
