Cell Biology, Neurobiology & Anatomy

"While the education and training within MCW was top-notch, it was the ability to build a network of colleagues and collaborators as a graduate student that really positioned me for success."

"In 1998, I came across MCW during my search for a graduate program that would allow me to work on the visual system. Through my search, I found a fabulous mentor in the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy.

One of the best things about MCW was the encouragement students received to attend outside meetings. Another positive aspect of the training environment was the quality of students. I was surrounded by peers with whom I could grow, and this was incredibly helpful in “surviving” graduate school.

I finished my PhD in just under four years, and then stayed as a postdoc at MCW for about nine months before moving to the University of Rochester for another postdoc. It was there that I began to work on retinal imaging, a topic very different from my thesis work at MCW. However, MCW had prepared me to think like a scientist. This basic but priceless skill could be applied to any endeavor. Indeed, science is more than learning a technique or a given field—it is understanding the process of discovery through hypothesis-driven exploration.

After four years in Rochester, MCW recruited me back in the Department of Ophthalmology. I am now an Associate Professor and continue to look back fondly at the scientific foundation that was provided to me as a student at MCW."
