Dr. McFarland is Professor of Medicine (pending) at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Division of Hematology and Oncology, Section of Benign Hematology. She graduated from the Oregon Health Sciences University in 1977 and completed both a residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina and a fellowship in Hematology at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Dr. McFarland is currently a Senior Medical Director at BloodCenter of Wisconsin and also serves as Medical Director of BCW's Platelet and Neutrophil Immunology Laboratory (PNIL).She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Blood Banking. Her research interests have focused on immune disorders of platelet numbers and function including autoimmune thrombocytopenia, neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia, post transfusion pupura, drug-induced thrombocytopenia, and refractoriness to platelet transfusions. She also serves as Principal Investigator for the Wisconsin Core Clinical Center of the NHLBI sponsored Transfusion Medicine/Hemostasis Clinical Trials Network. She has authored numerous peer reviewed and invited publications.
