Submitting Your Manuscript to the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS)

For peer-reviewed manuscripts of research supported by NIH funds (accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008), MCW authors must submit the final version of the manuscript with accompanying files to the NIHMS.

You must use the NIH Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) system to submit an article for inclusion in PubMed Central (PMC).

  • You deposit the manuscript files (e.g., Microsoft Word document and figures) in the NIHMS.
  • You indicate the NIH award(s) to which the article is related.
  • After the NIHMS converts your deposited files to a standard PMC format, NIHMS will email the PI to review the PMC formatted article to approve its release.

Some journals will deposit the manuscript files for you, although you will still have to provide the associated award information, and review and approve the article ("Method D") within the NIHMS system. The NIHMS will notify you via email when these actions are needed and include a link to the NIHMS website. NIH Has provided a list of publishers who use this method.

The NIH has also created a list of journals that submit articles to PubMed Central without author involvement ("Method A").

Please consult the NIHMS web page for more information. Online tutorials are also available.

Please note:
Beginning with May 25, 2008 anyone submitting an application, proposal or progress report to the NIH must include the PubMed Central reference number when citing articles arising from their NIH funded research. This includes applications submitted to the NIH for the May 25, 2008 and subsequent due dates.
