No pilot can take to the skies without proper medical authorization. And no physician can provide such clearance without the proper Federal Aviation Administration training. Alumni who serve as aviation medical examiners not only look out for the health of commercial and recreational pilots, they also are instrumental to the system that helps maintain safety for all air travelers.
As a 10-year-old boy, Dr. Michael Clark first began volunteering for Special Olympics, an organization with which he has several family ties. It is a commitment he has maintained throughout his life and as an emergency medicine physician, he now helps oversee the health of the athletes. Dr. Clark is Medical Director for Special Olympics Wisconsin and served as team physician for the athletes who participated in the 2010 National Games.
The National Institutes of Health has awarded a transformative grant to the Medical College that supports a partnership of eight Milwaukee institutions designed to move research discoveries more quickly to patient applications. The $20 million Clinical and Translational Science Award bridges institutions to connect faculty members with complementary interests and expertise, such as Dr. Michelle Johnson, whose robots are aiding in stroke rehabilitation.

The Medical College’s Department of Family and Community Medicine is on the leading-edge of the concept, and is in the review process for certification of its residency sites as patient-centered medical homes.

The Senior Awards Dinner for the Medical School Class of 2011 was held May 19, 2011, at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. The night was an opportunity to celebrate four years of accomplishment with friends and family.
On board a Naval vessel, Dr. Orlando L. Manfredi met his mentor, a man he is honoring with the establishment of a new endowed scholarship fund for medical student education. Dr. Manfredi built a significant radiology practice on Staten Island prior to his recent retirement.

Medical College of Wisconsin alumnus Dr. George M. Lange has been elected President of the Wisconsin Medical Society. Other alumni, faculty and students were also chosen for leadership positions in the Society.
On Match Day, graduating medical students nationwide found out where they will be serving residency training. Of the 206 graduating seniors at the Medical College, 198 students obtained first-year residency positions through the Match. Of the remaining eight students, three obtained positions outside the match and five students decided to defer their residency.
Commencement was held for graduates of The Medical College of Wisconsin on May 20, 2011, at the Milwaukee Theatre. A total of 275 degrees were awarded to students of the Medical School and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, consisting of 206 MD, 21 PhD, 25 MS, 12 MA, and 11 MPH degrees.
For his exemplary work as a physician and his commitment to education, J. Frank Wilson, MD, was named an Honorary Alumnus of The Medical College of Wisconsin this year. Dr. Wilson is Chairman and the Bernard & Miriam Peck Family Professor in Radiation Oncology at the Medical College.
After a rewarding career as a general surgeon, Dr. Clifford Starr determined he still had more to give. He and his wife have since journeyed on 17 medical mission trips to rural Guatemala to serve displaced people with little access to care. For his humble generosity, he has received the 2012 alumni Humanitarian Award.
Upon concluding an inspiring term as President of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. David Holmes was honored by another group of peers as he was named the 2012 Medical School Alumnus of the Year. For more than three decades, Dr. Holmes has served as a consummate clinician, mentor, investigator, innovator and leader in cardiology at the Mayo Clinic and its College of Medicine.
The 99th annual commencement took place on May 18 at the Milwaukee Theatre, at which the Medical College of Wisconsin and its Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences awarded 202 MD, 38 PhD, 27 MS, 4 MA, and 18 Master of Public Health degrees, as well as bestowed numerous honors.
Dr. Daniel McDermott has dedicated his career to the development of new drugs and study of their safety and efficacy in patient populations. His remarkable body of work led to his selection as the Medical College’s very first Graduate School Alumnus of the Year.
