Marquette professor named Graduate School Alumnus of the Year

Mar 07 - The Medical College of Wisconsin/Marquette Medical Alumni Association presented Lawrence G. Pan, PT, PhD, FAPTA, with its Graduate School Alumnus of the Year award on March 6 at an all-student meeting of the MCW Graduate Student Association. This is the award’s second year.

PhD program joins bioscience and engineering

The Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University jointly offer a PhD program in Functional Imaging, which integrates experience in biomedical science and applied engineering in studies related to the brain.

Adaptive optics redefines imaging

Conceived first as an astronomy technique to view space more clearly, then as a method for acquiring better satellite pictures, adaptive optics is redefining what is possible in ocular imaging. Dr. Joseph Carroll is helping build a unique program at the Medical College and is a key member of the first team to image the tiny rods of the eye.

A new, interactive career planning tool has been developed by a Medical College of Wisconsin faculty member and alumnus, along with other U.S. collaborators.

A guest of the Medical Humanities Program, alumnus Dr. Jon Mukand returned to the College to read from his latest book, which features his rehabilitation research and individual victories over paralysis.

Classes support scholarships

Alumni who celebrated reunions in 2012 gave a combined $773,340 to the Medical College in class gifts. In addition, reunion-year alumni have made planned giving commitments totaling more than $3 million this year.

Students seasoned for science

A record number of students participated this year in the Medical College’s Medical Student Summer Research Program, which pairs first- and second-year students with a faculty mentor for a laboratory-based research experience. The program gives future doctors perspective on how new discoveries are translated into the tools and treatments of tomorrow.

Telemedicine expands access to care

Gaining access to appropriate medical care can be difficult for patients limited by geography, disability or specialist availability. Alumni are engaging telemedicine in a number of creative ways to serve patients in the U.S. and internationally through distance technologies that allow for video conferencing, remote exams, diagnostics and follow-up care.

Aviation medical examiners clear pilots to fly

No pilot can take to the skies without proper medical authorization. And no physician can provide such clearance without the proper Federal Aviation Administration training. Alumni who serve as aviation medical examiners not only look out for the health of commercial and recreational pilots, they also are instrumental to the system that helps maintain safety for all air travelers.

Alumnus treats Special Olympics athletes

As a 10-year-old boy, Dr. Michael Clark first began volunteering for Special Olympics, an organization with which he has several family ties. It is a commitment he has maintained throughout his life and as an emergency medicine physician, he now helps oversee the health of the athletes. Dr. Clark is Medical Director for Special Olympics Wisconsin and served as team physician for the athletes who participated in the 2010 National Games.

Grant ushers new era of collaboration

The National Institutes of Health has awarded a transformative grant to the Medical College that supports a partnership of eight Milwaukee institutions designed to move research discoveries more quickly to patient applications. The $20 million Clinical and Translational Science Award bridges institutions to connect faculty members with complementary interests and expertise, such as Dr. Michelle Johnson, whose robots are aiding in stroke rehabilitation.

New President answers important questions

John R. Raymond, Sr., MD, joined the Medical College as its sixth president and chief executive officer in July. In a recent interview, he describes his career in medicine, his philosophy on collaboration, the future of The Medical College of Wisconsin and the role of alumni in the school’s growth.

Reunion classes support scholarships and more

Oct. 30 - Around the time current students are preparing to complete their academic year, groups of former medical students return to the Medical College of Wisconsin for the opportunity to reminisce and reconnect with their classmates and alma mater. They also use these annual alumni reunions as key opportunities to demonstrate their support of the College.

“The Man with the Bionic Brain”: physician-author to speak at MCW

Aug. 10 - A former high school football star’s paralyzing injury, and the new technology that allowed him to re-establish communication with the world, is the focus of a new book and an upcoming presentation at the Medical College of Wisconsin sponsored by the MCW Medical Humanities Program.

Country doctor is humanitarian

Impressive are the bodies of work of this year’s alumni award recipients. Dr. Thomas Chisholm received the Humanitarian Award for his dedication to the underserved domestically and internationally.

Medical homes center on patient

Now that technology has caught up to the concept, the patient-centered medical home is gaining momentum as an innovative approach that could help reform the health care system while improving quality of care for patients. By coordinating and integrating all aspects of a patient’s care and improving accessibility while compensating physicians for value added, the medical home concept could benefit doctors and patients. The Medical College’s Department of Family and Community Medicine is on the leading-edge of the concept, and is in the review process for certification of its residency sites as patient-centered medical homes.

One presidency to the next

As Dr. Steven Bergin’s term as President of the Wisconsin Medical Society ended, his term as the new President of the Medical College of Wisconsin/Marquette Medical Alumni Association began. Other new alumni officers and directors were also elected this spring.

An expert in cerebral vascular and skull base tumor surgery, alumnus Dr. Philip Stieg is Professor and Chairman of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Pulmonologist serves alumni well

Impressive are the bodies of work of this year’s alumni award recipients. Dr. Jane Neumann received the Distinguished Service Award for her years of service to the Alumni Association.

Senior Dinner highlights

The Senior Awards Dinner for the Medical School Class of 2011 was held May 19, 2011, at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. The night was an opportunity to celebrate four years of accomplishment with friends and family.

Radiologist sets up scholarship

On board a Naval vessel, Dr. Orlando L. Manfredi met his mentor, a man he is honoring with the establishment of a new endowed scholarship fund for medical student education. Dr. Manfredi built a significant radiology practice on Staten Island prior to his recent retirement.

Top honor for Air Force alumnus

Impressive are the bodies of work of this year’s alumni award recipients. Lt. Gen. C. Bruce Green was named Alumnus of the Year for his military service, including his current role as Air Force Surgeon General

State medical society president is alumnus

Medical College of Wisconsin alumnus Dr. George M. Lange has been elected President of the Wisconsin Medical Society. Other alumni, faculty and students were also chosen for leadership positions in the Society.

Match Day results

On Match Day, graduating medical students nationwide found out where they will be serving residency training. Of the 206 graduating seniors at the Medical College, 198 students obtained first-year residency positions through the Match. Of the remaining eight students, three obtained positions outside the match and five students decided to defer their residency.

Commencement nuggets

Commencement was held for graduates of The Medical College of Wisconsin on May 20, 2011, at the Milwaukee Theatre. A total of 275 degrees were awarded to students of the Medical School and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, consisting of 206 MD, 21 PhD, 25 MS, 12 MA, and 11 MPH degrees.

Rad Onc Chair named honorary alumnus

For his exemplary work as a physician and his commitment to education, J. Frank Wilson, MD, was named an Honorary Alumnus of The Medical College of Wisconsin this year. Dr. Wilson is Chairman and the Bernard & Miriam Peck Family Professor in Radiation Oncology at the Medical College.

Alumnus, wife are Starrs to Guatemala

After a rewarding career as a general surgeon, Dr. Clifford Starr determined he still had more to give. He and his wife have since journeyed on 17 medical mission trips to rural Guatemala to serve displaced people with little access to care. For his humble generosity, he has received the 2012 alumni Humanitarian Award.

Cardiologist propels field forward

Upon concluding an inspiring term as President of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. David Holmes was honored by another group of peers as he was named the 2012 Medical School Alumnus of the Year. For more than three decades, Dr. Holmes has served as a consummate clinician, mentor, investigator, innovator and leader in cardiology at the Mayo Clinic and its College of Medicine.

The 99th annual commencement took place on May 18 at the Milwaukee Theatre, at which the Medical College of Wisconsin and its Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences awarded 202 MD, 38 PhD, 27 MS, 4 MA, and 18 Master of Public Health degrees, as well as bestowed numerous honors.

Cultivating the pharm

Dr. Daniel McDermott has dedicated his career to the development of new drugs and study of their safety and efficacy in patient populations. His remarkable body of work led to his selection as the Medical College’s very first Graduate School Alumnus of the Year.

Dermatologist new alumni leader

Dermatologist and Alumni Association President Dr. Kathleen Stokes encourages alumni to follow her example and discover an opportunity to lead in service of the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Global health opportunities grow

The John M. Kohler Foundation has given $250,000 to the Medical College of Wisconsin Global Health Program in memory of Dr. Elaine Kohler, a former associate professor of pediatrics and fellow alumna.

MCW like family for honored alumna

Dr. Victoria Vollrath’s contributions to the Medical College have comprised nearly every form and function but always with her fullest level of commitment. She has earned the 2012 alumni Distinguished Service Award for her extensive involvement with her alma mater.

Seniors celebrate Match Day

Graduating medical students were matched to their residency positions via the National Residency Matching Program on March 16. Of the 202 fourth-year medical students at the Medical College, 196 students obtained first-year residency positions on Match Day.
