Facilities - MCW-Milwaukee

The Health Research Center (HRC) is a 169,000-square-foot facility that serves as your front door to MCW. The HRC includes an auditorium, conference rooms and small group teaching spaces, updated with state-of-the-art communication and education technology.

The HRC also houses research laboratories and the Linda T. and John A. Mellowes Center for Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine, Center for Patient Care and Outcomes Research, and the Todd Wehr Library.

As of Fall of 2017, we established the School of Pharmacy Administration, Admissions, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Faculty Affairs, Graduate School Administration and School of Medicine Administration located on the 2nd floor of HRC right at the Main entrance of MCW.

The Medical Education Building (MEB) has many of the spaces that support the education mission. Your educational experience will include:

• The Discovery Classroom, which provides team-based, active learning space
• The Learning and Skills Classrooms, which provide simulated exam rooms for learning clinical skills
• The Form and Function Lab, which provides state-of- the-art, human anatomy space
• Additional study, lounge and collaboration spaces

In addition, the STAR Center provides a controlled environment where you will practice your clinical skills using standardized (or actor) patients, medical simulators and task trainers under the direction of MCW faculty and staff.

In the MEB, you will also find two large modern auditoriums, Academic Affairs offices, cafeteria, an exercise center, and one entire floor of research space.

Under Construction: Starting Fall of 2017 into the first half of 2018 we will have the 1st floor south of MEB under construction. In this area we will have a connection to our new MCW Office Building and new homes for Institute for Health & Equity and Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

The Hub for Collaborative Medicine, a 320,000 square foot office building, opened January of 2018. This building houses many MCW Clinical Departments that were previously located in Froedtert Hospital and other buildings on MRMC.

The Hub for Collaborative Medicine is an investment in MCW’s long-term health and growth by doing the following:

• Brings clinicians together and closer to our research, educational and community engagement endeavors
• Creates a modern workplace that fosters innovation, collaboration and collegiality
• Helps MCW attract and keep the best people
• Supports clinical growth and an improved patient experience while preserving space for future expansion on the MRMR campus

The Basic Science Building (BSB) is connected to the Medical Education Building and MACC Fund Research Center and provides you with convenient access to faculty in the basic science departments.

In the BSB, you will find the research laboratories and offices for the Departments of Biochemistry; Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy; Microbiology & Immunology; Pharmacology and Toxicology; and Physiology. The building includes space for the Biomedical Resource Center, a support facility for research.

The MACC Fund Research Center (MFRC) is connected to the Medical Education Building and Basic Science Buildings. The six-story 141,000-square-foot research center is named after the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer), a Milwaukee-based organization dedicated to supporting pediatric cancer research.

The MACC Fund Research Center houses:

• Laboratories of MCW’s Cancer Center, including its pediatric component, the Midwest Children’s Cancer Center
• Research laboratories for various clinical departments
• The Department of Biophysics, home of the National Biomedical Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Center. The EPR Center is identified by the National Institutes of Health as the largest, most comprehensive facility of its kind in the country.
• Space for the Biomedical Resource Center, a support facility for research.

MCW and Children’s Wisconsin share a joint biomedical research center. The 298,000-square-foot facility provides shared research space and two wings of laboratories— one for MCW and one for the Children’s Wisconsin Research Institute. The research building fosters collaboration, provides efficiencies and avoids costly replication of highly specialized research facilities and services.

MCW’s research space includes expanded laboratories for:

• MCW’s Cancer Center Structural Biology program
• Center for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR)
  
• Biotechnology and Bioengineering Center
  
• Other MCW research groups

Pediatric research programs include:

• Genomics (Individualized Medicine Institute; Molecular Critical Care; Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacogenomics and Teratology),
• Developmental and Cellular Biology (Children’s Kidney Disease Research Institute, Molecular Embryology, Developmental Vascular Biology)
• Vascular Biology (Surgical Endothelial Biology, Hemangioma Research Program).

In addition, the building’s Core Facilities include Histology and Imaging and Pharmacogenomics. The facility also houses an expanded state-of-the art Biomedical Resource Center serving MCW, Children’s Wisconsin Research Institute, and the Versiti Blood Research Institute.

The Daniel M. Soref Imaging Research Facility houses several imaging scanners used to conduct cutting-edge imaging research that advances our knowledge of the brain and the diseases that most impact our ability to think, feel and express ourselves. These neurological and psychiatric diseases include epilepsy, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The 7T MRI scanner produces some of the most detailed images of the brain ever collected. These images can lead to earlier disease detection and closer monitoring of brain conditions and investigational therapies. The 7T scanner is a shared resource that supports ongoing research collaborations among investigators from many departments at MCW, Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Other scanners housed in the Soref Imaging Research Facility include a 9.4T MRI scanner and SPECT/CT scanner, which are used for experimental research.

The Eye Institute is the only facility in Southeastern Wisconsin devoted exclusively to eye care, graduate medical education in ophthalmology, and vision research. Thousands of patients are served annually by its clinics, operating suites, and special diagnostic services. The Eye Institute, whose clinical operations are managed by Froedtert Hospital, contains research laboratories and faculty offices for MCW’s Department of Ophthalmology. It also serves as a regional referral center. Patients are referred by ophthalmologists from all parts of Wisconsin and throughout the nation.

The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratory houses the offices of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and the laboratories of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Approximately eight million patient samples are processed each year in this modern laboratory facility. The lab serves patients at Froedtert Hospital as well as hospitals and physicians throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. The building is located directly across from MCW on Connell Ave. and will soon be connected via enclosed pedestrian bridge to our MCW Office Building that is under construction.

MCW is the heart of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center (MRMC) campus, located in west suburban Milwaukee. MCW and its affiliates form the only academic medical center in eastern Wisconsin. The campus serves as a regional resource for biomedical education, patient care, and research.

The synergy of MCW physicians, research scientists, and educators working together on the academic medical center campus creates a leading-edge environment for rapidly translating new discoveries to patient care.

In addition to MCW, the campus includes Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Wisconsin, the Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin, Curative Care Network, and Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division.

One additional major teaching affiliate—the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center - is a short distance from the campus. Most of the physicians practicing at MCW’s major affiliated institutions are full-time faculty members at MCW.

The campus affiliates and the VA Medical Center are where your primary clinical learning experiences take place.

Froedtert Hospital
Froedtert Hospital is the primary adult hospital affiliate of the Medical College of Wisconsin and is staffed by MCW physicians.

Children’s Wisconsin
Children’s Wisconsin is the principal pediatric hospital affiliate of the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center
The Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center has been a major hospital affiliate of the Medical College of Wisconsin since 1946 and is staffed by MCW physicians. The Zablocki VA is one of the busiest and most comprehensive medical centers operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Versiti Blood Research Institute
Investigators at the Blood Research Institute collaborate closely with Medical College of Wisconsin researchers. Their research is world-renowned for the investigation of blood-related diseases and conditions such as sickle cell disease and hemophilia.

Curative Care Network
The Curative Care Network provides services that improve the function and quality of life for persons with disabilities or limiting conditions. Curative is one of the largest, most experienced and diverse human service organizations in the region.

Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division
The Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division provides care and treatment to developmentally, emotionally and mentally ill adults, children and adolescents through both County-operated programs and contracts with community agencies.
