Bench-to-Bedside

As a facilitator for this course’s M1 Clinical Skills Workshops & Clinical Reasoning Sessions at the Green Bay Campus, you will help students develop their clinical decision-making processes through sessions that correlate basic science concepts with normal and abnormal history and exam findings. All participants will receive an adjunct faculty appointment with the Medical College of Wisconsin.

 

TIME COMMITMENT

Each session will take place Wednesday afternoons beginning in January and run through May. You may sign up for whichever sessions are of interest to you. All teaching sessions will take place at the MCW-Green Bay Campus or the MCW space at Bellin College.

 

FACULTY EXPECTATIONS

• Apply for adjunct faculty appointment

• Grade and provide feedback on student assignments (clinical reasoning exercises).

• Deliver content using scripted material which will be provided for:

* Clinical Skills Workshops: an interactive review of the basic science behind a normal exam within a given organ system; abnormalities are reviewed and discussed in context of presenting symptoms

* Clinical Reasoning Sessions: a walk-through of patient cases where students must ask for history and perform a physical exam

• Become familiar with the MCW-Green Bay Campus teaching technology

Foundations of Clinical Medicine

As a small group facilitator, you will observe and evaluate a small group of M1 students as they practice their interviewing and physical exam skills. All participants will receive an adjunct faculty appointment with the Medical College of Wisconsin.

 

TIME COMMITMENT

Facilitators have the opportunity to participate in up to three different sessions per week over a period of five weeks. Pick and choose sessions based off of your level of interest and/or comfort. The Foundations of Clinical Medicine course runs from July 6th through August 6th. Sessions will occur on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and on Thursday mornings. All sessions will occur at the MCW-Green Bay Campus or MCW space at Bellin College.

 

FACULTY EXPECTATIONS

• Apply for adjunct faculty appointment

• Facilitate one or more sessions as your schedule permits

• Participate in planning meetings and faculty development sessions

• Provide feedback on student performance

 

SESSION TOPICS

Session topics will be broken out into more detail but will generally cover:

• Professionalism, Feedback, Ethics

• Interviewing and History Taking

• Vital Signs / Medication Reconciliation

• Physical Examination Skills

Clinical Apprenticeship

As a volunteer clinical preceptor for this course, you would supervise students as they explore the provision of patient care in an office setting each week for a half-day. As a preceptor, you would provide opportunities for students to practice history and basic exam skills during their clinical experiences. All volunteers will receive an adjunct faculty appointment at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

 

TIME COMMITMENT

This is a one-year volunteer commitment that runs August - May. Preceptors are encouraged to participate annually.

Students are available during the following times:

Monday morning

Wednesday morning

Friday afternoon

 

January - May

Monday afternoon

Thursday morning

Friday afternoon

* Students are not in clinic during their exam weeks or MCW holidays/breaks

 

FACULTY EXPECTATIONS

• Apply for adjunct faculty appointment

• Facilitate direct patient care experience with progressive independence (not just shadowing for a year)

• Provide feedback on student performance

• Complete periodic student performance assessments
