Gretchen Wagner, a third-year medical student at MCW, describes what it’s like growing up in a tight-knit community like Wisconsin Rapids. “Everywhere you go, you will run into someone know, especially if you are a health care provider,” she said. When Wagner would go to the store with her mother, a home care nurse, “family members of former patients would come up to my mom to express their gratitude for her care of their relative, sometimes even years after that person had passed away,” said Wagner.
Seeing the appreciation and impact of taking care of someone impressed Wagner. She started her journey to become a doctor knowing exactly where she wants to end up. “I want to give back to my hometown,” said Wagner.
“I’m from Wisconsin and it’s important to me to stay here,” she said. Wagner received a scholarship from the Mead Witter Foundation, based in Wisconsin Rapids. “It’s touching to receive this scholarship. It means so much to me that my hometown is supporting me,” she said. “Medical school is a huge financial burden, this scholarship helps significantly,” she added.
Wagner says she can’t wait to return to central Wisconsin to begin treating people in that region. She did her clinical apprenticeship in a family medicine clinic her first and second year of medical school and says it reinforced where she wants to be, and what she wants to do. She plans to practice in a clinic when she finishes her residency-- and chose family medicine because she wants to be able to develop long-term relationships with her patients over time and be their “home base” for health care.
She also is excited for the new MCW campus opening in central Wisconsin. “I think it is a great opportunity for those students to see firsthand the health needs in our community.”

From their first days on campus, MCW students benefit from an educational program that provides early clinical experiences and access to the laboratories of federally funded investigators. Our faculty physicians lead a Discovery Curriculum that gives students the deep understanding of human biology and patient care they need to emerge as talented, compassionate doctors ready to treat patients and families.
