Ten years ago, a couple days after her 14th birthday, MCW-Milwaukee medical student Megan Cory was diagnosed with diabetes. In the ensuing months, she noticed how many misconceptions people had about the disease, and she made it her mission to become an advocate for diabetes prevention and awareness.
One outgrowth of this mission was DiaBeaters, a student-run diabetes awareness organization she launched in 2014 while an undergraduate student at the University of California – Los Angeles. Her brother Kevin is running this chapter and is applying to attend medical school as well. A chapter also has been launched at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and a chapter was just approved at MCW. The chapters in California and Texas are thriving and have received several grants.
In 2016, Megan and her brother launched BeatDiabetes to help promote diabetes awareness and prevention and promote healthier lifestyles to other communities around the country. There is a mentorship component, which Megan, a first-year MCW student, hopes to expand into elementary and junior high schools in the Milwaukee area. One school has already reached out and asked BeatDiabetes to provide education and mentorship to their students in grades 5-8.
Since arriving at MCW this past fall, Megan has been named director of clinic day operations for the Saturday Clinic for the Uninsured, was selected co-president of the Dermatology Interest Group, and is developing plans to integrate a diabetes prevention and management program within the Saturday Clinic. She feels comfortable at MCW and wants to continue pursuing her mission.
“When I came to MCW for an interview, I felt at home, and saw myself being happy here,” Megan said. “MCW has all I wanted for programs and research opportunities, and they are very supportive of my community efforts. I couldn’t be happier with the choice I made.”

Giving to MCW
Sustaining Quality Healthcare Today
AND FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS OF PATIENTS AND FAMILIES
Your gift to the MCW Medical School is an investment in a healthier future for you, your family, and our communities. Whether it’s supporting scholarships, providing opportunities for students to work with our nationally recognized faculty researchers, or fostering an innovative curriculum with state-of-the-art medical technology, MCW donors are preserving quality healthcare for all of us.
The Impact of Your Giving
From their first days on campus, MCW students benefit from an educational program that provides early clinical experiences and access to the laboratories of federally funded investigators. Our faculty physicians lead a Discovery Curriculum that gives students the deep understanding of human biology and patient care they need to emerge as talented, compassionate doctors ready to treat patients and families.
You can be a part of their journey. Consider a gift supporting programs at our campuses in Milwaukee, Green Bay, or Central Wisconsin. Establish a scholarship fund. Or support a student research project. To donate today, click on one of the links below, visit MCW Giving or call (414) 955-4700.
