Most people can trace their career decisions back to a particular year or time period. Torey Hilt can pinpoint her desire to become a physician down to the exact day.
“My journey to medical school started on Dec. 23, 2005,” said Torey, a fourth-year medical student at MCW-Milwaukee, “when my almost-two-year-old sister was diagnosed with Stage IV neuroblastoma. My life would be forever altered in the days, months and years following this seminal moment.
“The compassionate and family-centered care my sister received from her pediatric oncologists at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital inspired me to pursue a career in medicine,” Torey added.
Torey has since refined her plans, and said that other life events directed her toward practicing pediatrics in a rural area.
“Children bring me joy, and I am enchanted by their curiosity about the world and how toddlers find shoelaces and technology equally fascinating,” she said. “I love how my childhood physician turned my annual physicals into a fun dance which always resulted in me smiling and laughing. For these and many other reasons, I want to make a difference by choosing pediatrics as my specialty and practicing community-based rural medicine similar to my upbringing in Buffalo County, Wisc. Medicine is an incredibly rewarding and satisfying career where I am honored to have the opportunity to change lives every day.”
Torey said that MCW-Milwaukee was a perfect place for her to bring to fruition her dreams of becoming a physician.
“When I visited MCW as a medical school applicant, it felt like home,” Torey said. “I knew after a few minutes that if I came to MCW, I would be treated with respect and kindness while being provided a top-tier medical education and support staff. Four years later, I can say it has exceeded all of my expectations.”
