Johnny Myers, a Green Bay, Wis., native, never intended to go to medical school, but now that he’s in his fourth year at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), he can’t imagine being anywhere else. “Medical school is fun,” said Myers. “It’s not easy, of course, and you have to learn how to handle different situations and stress, but you can have a life in medical school.”
Myers describes his path to medical school as a “slow burn.” He majored in physics at the University of Minnesota. “The more I got into physics, the more I liked my medically oriented classes,” said Myers. So he applied and was accepted at MCW, and never looked back. “Everything at MCW is centered on the students,” said Myers. “Everyone at MCW – from the faculty to the librarians – is dedicated to helping students successfully complete the program. The faculty is particularly committed to training competent doctors,” said Myers. “Being affiliated with MCW brings a certain level of prestige, because people in medicine know and respect the faculty here. It is amazing to have world-renowned faculty accessible to and supporting us,” Myers added.
Myers also enjoys the activities offered to MCW students, such as intramural sports. “I had the same teammates through all four years in my intramural league,” said Myers. Though I can probably count on one hand the number of games we won, we had fun, and it was nice way to take a much-needed break from studying along with other people who knew what you were going through,” Myers reflected.
In addition to his excitement for his future plans to pursue general surgery, Myers is also excited about the future plans for his alma mater. “When I tell people in Green Bay where I go to school they are excited to hear about MCW. It’s good for the state and good for the area to establish an MCW campus there,” Myers said.

The Impact of Your Giving
From their first days on campus, MCW students benefit from an educational program that provides early clinical experiences and access to the laboratories of federally funded investigators. Our faculty physicians lead a Discovery Curriculum that gives students the deep understanding of human biology and patient care they need to emerge as talented, compassionate doctors ready to treat patients and families.
