A Message from the Director
Joseph T. Barbieri, PhD

Joseph T. Barbieri, PhDThere is a national shortage of physician-scientists who can care for patients and conduct state-of-the-art research. The mission of the MSTP (MD-PhD) at the Medical College of Wisconsin is to support medical and research training leading to the combined MD-PhD degree. Our MSTP is partially supported by a T-32 training grant from the NIH. We welcome all applicants including those with an international background and students of diversity. Our MSTP will assist and support your education and reduce the cost associated with your training experience.

The Medical College of Wisconsin is one of the largest medical school in the United States and one of the fastest growing medical schools in research. We rank in the top third of medical schools for NIH funding. This is an outstanding national environment to earn the combined MD-PhD degree. Our trainees consistently secure residency and faculty positions in their field of academic interest.

Our MSTP provides students with experiences in academic medicine through a combination of patient care, research, and medical and graduate student education. While our MSTP provides direction for your studies, we recognize that your educational needs may be unique. To address this, MSTP provides two training options; the traditional "2-4-2" educational track, as well as a combined “integrated” curriculum that offers an integrated clinical and research training experience. In either track, students are encouraged to pursue clinical activities while undertaking graduate studies toward the PhD degree. During the academic year, our trainees have numerous opportunities to interact with physician scientists from within and outside our institution. Our Program is diverse and encourages interactions, including opportunities to interact with other MSTP trainees at national meetings.

The Medical College is located in a student-friendly suburb of Milwaukee, which gives students the opportunity to live in an environmental setting of their choice (urban or suburban).

The MSTP at the Medical College of Wisconsin will provide you with a quality education that combines state-of-the-art teaching and research, along with approachable faculty and staff. I encourage you to visit our Medical College and meet our current MSTP students and faculty. I think you will enjoy your experience.
