Learning Resource Fund

2014-2015 Proposal Submission Deadlines: Proposals for July must be submitted in eBridge by April 1

MCW CURRICULUM EVALUATION COMMITTEE AND ACADEMIC AFFAIRS LEARNING RESOURCES GRANTS
REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS DUE APRIL 1, 2014

Purpose

The Learning Resources Fund, administered by MCW’s Curriculum and Evaluation Committee (CEC), provides funding to MCW faculty. The purpose of this Request for Proposals (RFP) is to encourage major innovations in undergraduate medical education at the Medical College of Wisconsin that are consistent with MCW and CEC educational priorities.

Priority for current grant cycle

For the April 1, 2014, funding cycle, the Curriculum Evaluation Committee and Academic Affairs Office will consider grants that contribute to the improvement of teaching within the medical school. Prospective grantees may request funding to improve teaching at any level of the medical school curriculum. All grants must identify measureable outcomes that demonstrate an improvement in the quality of faculty teaching skills. Funds may be used for longitudinal improvement activities or single events such as workshops or seminars that are directly tied to an improvement in teaching activities.
Please note: projects that are primarily intended to change student or resident curricula will not be considered during this cycle.

Eligibility

Applicants must be a full-time faculty member at the Medical College of Wisconsin and not have any ongoing Learning Resources Grants that have not been completed which include the submission of a final report.

Overview

Applications are limited to 6 pages and should identify a specific aim, methods, key outcomes and how they will be measured, and dissemination plans. All proposals also must address the sustainability of the project once the Learning Resources funds have been expended.

Funds Available

Depending on resources required and the quality of the grants received, it is anticipated that 3 to 4 grants will be funded on this cycle.  Any applicant considering submitting a grant with a budget exceeding $20,000 should consult with the Academic Affairs Office early in the grant process since it is unlikely funding requests of this magnitude will be successful unless the project is deemed to be of great significance to the institution. The total length of funding is dependent on the needs of the project but, in general, should not exceed 2 years.

Reporting requirements

All Learning Resource Grant recipients are required to submit a final report within 30 days of the conclusion of the grant period.  This report must include details about the implementation of the grant, achievement of outcomes, and dissemination of the results either internally or externally. In circumstances where the project has not been completed or the results are still under evaluation, no-cost extensions may be requested from the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Assessment of proposals

All eligible proposals must be completed in ebridge by April 1, 2014. The Curriculum Evaluation Committee will review all grants and make recommendations for funding to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs who will make a final decision on funding. Applicants will notified of funding decisions by May 15 for funding that starts July 1, 2014.
Grants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Degree to which the project will improve teaching at MCW
  • Feasibility
  • Sustainability once the grant concludes
  • Appropriateness of budget
