Kevin R. Regner, M.D. in collaboration with Dr. Richard Roman (Physiology), Dr. Scott Van Why (Pediatric Nephrology), and Dr. Brian Shames (Transplant Surgery) is establishing a research laboratory that will focus on ischemic acute kidney injury (AKI). His goal is to develop a research program that will: 1.) translate laboratory discoveries in AKI to clinical medicine and 2.) perform experiments that further explore questions generated at the bedside.
Current Projects include:
i. Evaluation of the protective effect of 20-HETE mimetics in ischemic kidney injury. The long term goal of this research is to develop new therapies to prevent or treat AKI based on an understanding of the genetic, physiologic, and molecular mechanisms that underlie the protective effect of 20-HETE in ischemic kidney injury.
ii. Evaluation of the long term effects of acute renal ischemia. By utilizing genetic models of diabetic and hypertension we aim to simulate the physiologic milieu in humans that increases susceptibility to AKI.
