"Kidney development and relation to kidney disease and hypertension" Dr. El-Meanawy's Laboratory is a part of the Kidney Disease Center in the Cardiovascular Research Center at MCW. The research program is focused on abnormal kidney development during preganancy which leads to adulthood kidney disease and hypertension. There are multiple causes for abnormal kidney development including gene variation, maternal exposure to environmental toxins, premature birth, and very low birth weight. Dr. El-Meanawy is using animal models to identify factors that can be modified to improve the adult health and has idnetified 2 genes which reposnible for kidney underdevelopment. He is also working in collaborations with outside institutions to develop diagnostics for early detections of adolescents who are at risk for developing kidney disease. Identifications of those subjectes will allow the delivery of proper medical care to reduce or prevent kidney disease.
Postdoctoral: NIH sponsored to study Genetic control of kidney disease and kidney fibrosis.
