Space is allotted for neurology research at the VAMC and in the MACC Fund Research Center. Approximately 12,000 square feet of laboratory space is located at the VAMC, and one-quarter of the floor (approximately 5,000 square feet) is located in the MACC Fund Research Center. The Medical College of Wisconsin, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and Froedtert Hospital are planning a joint effort to build a dedicated Neuroscience Center in the next three years with expanded research space and consolidation of clinical services.
Dr. Whelan's laboratory is in the MACC (Midwest Athletes against Childhood Cancer) Fund Research Center, immediately adjacent to the Medical College's basic science departments and in close proximity to the research facilities of his co-investigators
Major Equipment includes a research hyperbaric chamber specifically equipped for tissue culture and animal experiments, fluorescence spectrophotometer, refrigerated centrifuges, analytical balances, tissue culture incubator with two chambers, tissue culture hood, fume hood, conventional microscopes, inverted phase-contrast microscope with photomicroscopy capability, digital cameras (Olympus), a scintillation counter, gamma counter, -70°C freezers, liquid nitrogen freezer and refrigerators, and an extensive variety of LED-arrays.
