Global Health Electives

An elective in a resource-limited setting during residency is an invaluable experience.  You gain an understanding of the practice of medicine in other countries, you begin to grasp the true meaning of disparity in resource-limited areas, and you start to see the role of societal factors in the distribution of health resources.

There are multiple opportunities for doing a global health elective, both in the US and abroad.  Currently, our program offers a precepted elective at Hillside Health Care International in Belize. Moreover, starting the fall 2010 academic year, we began offering a precepted elective at a Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC) clinic in rural Uganda (Beatrice Tierney Health Center II).  Additionally, residents can arrange their own international electives, as long as they are safe, precepted and approved by Drs. St. Clair and Dean Simons.  Please take a look at the information on this page and contact Dr. Nicole St Clair to assist with your elective planning.
