Electives

  • Our elective experiences allow residents to explore their specific interests in pediatric medicine while working with many world and national experts in their respective pediatric subspecialties.
  • We also encourage interested house staff to utilize elective time to pursue opportunities in research, advocacy, and international health.
  • Several of our more unique electives include:
    • Fox Valley Hospitalist Elective –residents work 1-on-1 with community hospitalists at CHW-Fox Valley in Neenah, Wisconsin
    • Transport Medicine – residents become integrated in the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Transport team and participate in patient transport from all-over Wisconsin, become adept at IV placement and assessment of ill-patients in the non-children’s hospital setting
    • Dermatology – this world-renowned sub-specialty clinic at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin allows residents to learn pediatric dermatology first-hand from faculty in one of the top pediatric dermatology departments in the country. In particular, the department features world-experts in vascular anomalies including hemangiomas and other birthmarks.
    • Lactation Medicine – a popular elective rotation for residents entering primary care fields. During the month, our residents work directly with neonatology and general pediatric faculty and lactation medicine specialists to learn more about the field and practice of lactation medicine.
    • Anesthesiology/Procedural Sedation – an opportunity for pediatric residents to improve their procedural skills including intubation and IV placement.
    • Infectious Diseases – on this rotation, residents work side-by-side with infectious disease world experts in a variety of fields including HIV, rabies, respiratory viruses, and infection in immunocompromised patients
    • Otolaryngology – residents on this elective enjoy learning about many of the ENT disorders affecting their patients and the surgical steps taken to correct these disorders from enthusiastic and welcoming faculty
    • Toxicology – a unique opportunity to learn from experts in the field of pediatric toxicology and participate in rounds and call at the Wisconsin Poison Center at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin
