Medical College of Wisconsin/Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Faculty

Our Department of Pediatrics has over 300 faculty, representing all pediatric subspecialties and disciplines. These faculty provide state-of-the-art clinical care and conduct innovative clinical, translational, and basic research.  They are dedicated to teaching and mentoring residents, medical students, and fellows.

Our faculty and our clinical care units are internationally recognized for their clinical excellence.  We are a regional and national referral center and our patient outcomes are among the best in the country. One hundred and seventy-seven Children's Hospital of Wisconsin physicians were recognized in 2010-2011 as “Best Doctors in America”.  Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists made up two-thirds of all pediatricians receiving such recognition in the state.

Residents learn directly from faculty who discover new diseases, develop innovative therapies, and pave the way for improving the health of all children.  A few examples include:

• Dr. Rodney Willoughby – developed the “Milwaukee protocol” to successfully treat acute rabies infection through induction of coma
• Dr. James Verbsky – described, for the first time, a patient lacking Interleukin-1 Receptor antagonist and pioneered the use of recombinant Interleukin-1 antagonist to treat this deficiency
• Dr. Peter Havens – world expert in pediatric HIV infection, founder of the Wisconsin HIV primary care network, and co-lead author of the AAP’s major policy statement on infant pediatric HIV in the United States
• Dr. David Dimmock – used genomic sequencing to discover and direct therapy for a novel form of inflammatory bowel disease
• Dr. James Tweddel – worldwide leader in quality outcomes of staged cardiothoracic surgery for hypoplastic left heart syndrome
• Dr. Beth Drolet – nationally and internationally recognized pediatric dermatologist who specializes in the treatment of hemangiomas and other vascular malformations
• Dr. Jack Routes – newborn screening pioneer, led way for Wisconsin to be the first state to screen all newborns for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID)
• Dr. Earnestine Willis – national expert in pediatric urban health and child advocacy; director and founder of the Center for Advancement of Urban Children.  Secured one of the original Anne Dyson Foundation Grants to educate residents in community pediatrics.
• Dr. David Margolis – leader in unrelated match bone marrow transplant and consultant for the television show Gray’s Anatomy. 

The educational leaders of our department have developed innovative educational scholarship projects, continually publish and present their educational scholarship nationally, and have held leadership positions in their respective national educational organizations. 

In addition, numerous faculty have edited and contributed to texts in their specific subspecialties. Here are a few examples of the outstanding and internationally-recognized work of our faculty:

• Dr. Robert Kliegman, is editor-in-chief of the Nelson’s Textbook of Pediatrics
• On Call: Pediatrics, a handbook used by residents and students worldwide, was written by the program directors and residents of our program.
