My MCW Story: George MacKinnon III
George MacKinnon III PhD, MS, RPh, Founding Dean of the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Pharmacy School, is bringing the best in pharmacy education to Milwaukee, with a focus on elevating pharmacists’ contribution to the healthcare continuum.
Dr. MacKinnon is a Wisconsin native and graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy and Loyola University. During his career, he served in a leadership capacity in the establishment and accreditation of three new colleges of pharmacy in the U.S. The advancing team-based healthcare delivery models, coupled with an undersupply of primary care providers in Wisconsin, drove Dr. MacKinnon to set his sights on developing a pipeline of new, world-class pharmacists to ensure high quality healthcare continues for future generations throughout his home state.
“We truly have a once-in-a-professional-lifetime opportunity here at MCW, and we intend to maximize it,” Dr. MacKinnon said. “The MCW Pharmacy School is poised to fundamentally change the education of Doctor of Pharmacy students and advance the profession to impact patient care in the State of Wisconsin and beyond. Our intentions are not only to produce the pharmacy graduate of the future, but also create, in conjunction with our medical colleagues, other healthcare providers and institutions, practice models and teams of the future that appropriately leverage the role of the pharmacist to achieve better health outcomes in patients.
Sustaining High-Quality Healthcare Today and For Future Generations
Why Give?
From their first days on campus, MCW students benefit from an educational program that provides early clinical experiences and access to the laboratories of federally funded researchers. The faculty physicians within our Medical School lead a Discovery Curriculum that gives students the deep understanding of human biology and patient care they need to emerge as talented, compassionate doctors ready to treat patients and families. Our nationally recognized Graduate School faculty fuels that passion and creativity in the next generation of health researchers, focused on developing effective treatments to fight devastating diseases and improving public health. Additionally, our Pharmacy School faculty provides specialty tracks to train future pharmacists in fields of critical need, including pharmacogenomics, cancer, psychiatry and other specialties. You can be a part of their journey. Consider a gift supporting programs at our Medical School campuses in Milwaukee, Green Bay or Central Wisconsin, or our Graduate School and Pharmacy School in Milwaukee. Establish a scholarship fund, support a student research project or facilitate vital health screenings and immunization clinics.
