$2.5M Grant for Malawi HIV Study

The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a five-year, $2.53 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to study the relationship between HIV vulnerability and changes in the economic environment and food security in rural Malawi. Malawi a country in sub-Saharan Africa has a high prevalence of HIV infection, poverty, and child malnutrition.

Van Valin, Specialist in Pediatric Sports Medicine Joins Medical College Faculty

Scott Van Valin, MD, a specialist in pediatric sports medicine, has been appointed assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery in the division of pediatric orthopaedic surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He has also been appointed to the medical staff of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, where he will see patients in the Variety Club Orthopedic Center at Children’s Hospital and at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Clinics –Greenway in Greenfield.

Race Affects Access, Not Survival Survival for Bone Marrow Cancer Treatment

A new study by researchers at The Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center Milwaukee, has found that African Americans and whites have identical survival rates after undergoing autologous (self donor) bone marrow transplant treatment for a common cancer of the bone marrow (multiple myeloma). However, in a previous study the researchers showed that African Americans were only half as likely as whites to actually receive a bone marrow transplant, the well-established life-prolonging treatment for the disease.

An analysis of emergency medical services (EMS)–treated cardiac arrest outcomes in 10 regions in North America finds a five-fold difference in survival rates, according to a study in the September 24 issue of Journal of American Medical Association. Approximately 166,000 to 310,000 Americans per year experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

RSV Vaccine Study

Medical College of Wisconsin researchers at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin are studying the tolerability and effectiveness of an investigational vaccine to prevent two of the most common childhood respiratory infections. They are seeking healthy infants and children between the ages of six and 24 months to participate in the first part of the study. In the second part of the study, the researchers will be looking for infants, aged one to three months, in addition to the six to 24 month-old group.

Christopher Butson, Ph.D., has been appointed assistant professor of both neurology and neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin and to the medical staff or Froedtert Hospital. His research program is in neural engineering, which is the use of engineering methods and clinical studies to treat individuals with neurological impairments. His current projects include the use of deep brain stimulation to treat movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, and the use of cortical stimulation, a type of brain pacemaker, for treatment of epilepsy, tinnitus, pain and other disorders. July 31 - Although the need to translate basic science discoveries into the clinical arena is widely acknowledged, a new study by researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee, and National Institutes of Health (NIH) identified reasons why clinical science grant applications receive less positive peer reviews than basic science grant applications to the NIH. Study of Fatalities Reveals Severe Retinal Hemorrhaging Linked to Severe Motor Vehicle Crashes

June 26 - The severity of retinal hemorrhaging for young children in motor vehicle crashes is closely correlated to the severity of the crash, according to a new study by researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Researchers Studying Cryoablation To Relieve Metastatic Bone Pain in Cancer Patients

May 16 - Medical College of Wisconsin researchers at Froedtert Hospital are leading one of approximately 15 sites enrolling patients in a nationwide study to compare the effectiveness of cryoablation, a rapid freezing technique, to that of radiation therapy, the established standard of care, for relief of pain from cancer that has spread to the bone. The study is funded in part by the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute.

May 14 - Todd Gudausky, M.D., has been appointed assistant professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and to the medical staff of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. NIH Renews Funding of MCW National EPR For Years 32-36, As a Biomedical Technology Resource Center

May 5 - The National Biomedical Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin has received a five-year, $5.66 million renewal grant from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. The EPR Center, in the department of biophysics, was established in 1976 and is classified as a “Biomedical Technology Resource Center (BTRC).” It is one of eight major federally-designated research centers at the College.

Medical College Using NASA Technology in Study Of Research Therapy for Diabetic Macular Edema

April 2 - Medical College of Wisconsin researchers are conducting a pilot study, supported in part by the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, of near-infrared light therapy for diabetic macular edema, a form of diabetic eye disease that results in central vision loss.
