Novel Biomarkers Reveal Evidence of Radiation Exposure

May 22 - Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin have identified novel biomarkers that could be used to confirm exposure to damaging radiation in large groups of people potentially exposed to unknown and variable doses for the purpose of triage and treatment.

Daniel J. McDermott, PhD, has been named the first ever Graduate School Alumnus of the Year by the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette Medical Alumni Association. Dr. McDermott earned his PhD in physiology in 1969 from the Medical College.

April 26 - Ann K. Rosenthal, MD, professor of medicine (rheumatology), has been appointed chief of the division of rheumatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Rosenthal is also the new Will and Cava Ross Professor of medicine, and will assume the new position of vice chair for faculty development in the department of medicine.

MCW Researcher to Study Bacteria Responsible for Common Disease in Developing Countries

April 24 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a two-year, $420,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to investigate Leptospira, the bacteria that cause leptospirosis.

Botox Injections Only Modestly Beneficial for Headaches

April 24 - Although botulinum toxin A (Botox) injections have been commonly prescribed to migraine sufferers, researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Kyoto Japan have found only a modest benefit to patients with chronic migraine headaches and chronic daily headaches who received the treatment.

MCW Physiology Professor Earns American Physiological Society’s Henry Pickering Bowditch Award

April 23 - Mingyu Liang, PhD, MB, professor of physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, has been awarded the Henry Pickering Bowditch Award for his extensive research accomplishments in the mechanisms governing high blood pressure and kidney disease.

Saturday Free Clinic to Begin Seeing Pediatric Patients

April 23 - The Saturday Clinic for the Uninsured, a joint venture of the Medical College of Wisconsin and Columbia St. Mary’s, will expand its services to include pediatric patients not covered by health insurance.

Medical College Researcher to Study Viral DNA Replication

April 12 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to investigate the replication of DNA in vaccinia virus, a poxvirus closely related to smallpox and monkeypox.

Rehabilitation Specialist Sarah Eickmeyer joins MCW, Froedtert Hospital and Zablocki VA staff

April 11 - Sarah Eickmeyer, MD, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She sees patients at Froedtert Hospital and at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center.

Internal Medicine Clinic Earns National Recognition for Patient-Centered Care

April 10 - The Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin General Internal Medicine Clinic has been recognized as a Level 3 (highest level) Patient-Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). The clinic, which is staffed by faculty physicians from the Medical College’s Department of Medicine, is located in the Specialty Clinics Building on the Froedtert & Medical College campus.

Multiple Drug Cost Containment Policies Save Money, Generate Trade- Offs

April 9 - In an effort to control Medicaid prescription drug costs, more than half of US states have enacted multiple cost containment policies. However, there is very limited empirical research evaluating the economic impact of these multiple policies. Researchers at the Center for AIDS Intervention Research at the Medical College of Wisconsin analyzed four cost containment policies enacted sequentially in Michigan, and found that overall, the combined effect of the policies did lower costs, but some individual policies generated tradeoffs that actually reduced cost savings for the Medicaid program.

Medical College Researcher to Target Gene Linked to Vascular Anomalies

April 6 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $2.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to investigate a gene linked to vascular anomalies in infants and children.

Internist Navdeep Gupta joins Medical College faculty, Froedtert Hospital staff

April 3 - Navdeep Gupta, MD, has been appointed assistant professor of medicine (general internal medicine) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He sees patients at Froedtert Hospital as a member of the perioperative and consultative medicine section of the general internal medicine department.

MCW is 2nd Best Medical School for Post-Docs

April 2 - The Medical College of Wisconsin is ranked second among U.S. medical schools and universities for postdoctoral training, according to a new survey released by The Scientist magazine. Overall, the Medical College is the 15th best place in the country for postdoctoral scientists to conduct their research, moving up four spots in rank from last year’s list.

Perinatalogist Kristen Quinn joins Medical College faculty

April 2 - Kristen Quinn, MD, MS, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Maternal Fetal Medicine) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She will see patients at Froedtert Hospital, Community Memorial Hospital, Waukesha Memorial Hospital and Oconomowoc Hospital.

Anesthesiologist Jeffrey Quintana joins Medical College faculty, Froedtert Hospital and Zablocki VA

March 30 - Jeffrey Quintana, MD, has been appointed assistant professor of anesthesiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He provides care at the Pain Management Centers at Froedtert Hospital and the Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

2012 CTSI Pilot Grants Awarded

March 29 - The Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI) will fund a total of 19 new projects in 2012 through its pilot and collaborative grants program.

Internist Hany Mohamed Mahfouz joins Medical College faculty, Froedtert Hospital staff

March 27 - Hany M. Mahfouz, MBBS, MS, MD, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine (General Internal Medicine) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He sees inpatients at Froedtert Hospital.

Medical College to Train Medical Educators and Enhance Clinical Teaching

March 26 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) received a five-year, $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to train primary care physicians as educators, using a service-learning faculty development model pioneered at MCW. Primary care physicians will advance their skills as educators while in the clinic.

Cheryl A. Maurana, Ph.D. Appointed Vice President for Strategic Outreach

March 23 - Cheryl A. Maurana, PhD, has been promoted to Vice President for Strategic Outreach at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Maurana will relinquish her position as Senior Associate Dean for Institutional and Community Engagement in the medical school, but will retain the title of Director of Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin at the Medical College.

Pediatric Critical Care Specialist Fasiha Saeed joins MCW faculty, Children’s Hospital staff

March 21 - Fasiha M. Saeed, MD, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Critical Care) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She is a hospitalist in the pediatric intensive care unit practicing at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Medical College Researcher to Study Lipids That May Protect the Heart

March 20 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $2.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to study compounds that may protect the heart from tissue damage associated with ischemic heart disease. Garrett John Gross, PhD, professor of pharmacology and toxicology, is the principal investigator for the grant. Dr. Gross is a member of the Medical College’s Cardiovascular Center.

Science Café series to be held at Milwaukee Public Market

March 19 - The Community Engagement Key Function of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin will hold a series of Science Cafés at the Milwaukee Public Market that are free and open to the public. The theme of the 2012 series is “Health Myths/Health Facts,” and topics will include diabetes, immunizations, health screenings and mental health.

“Match Day” Reveals Future Plans for New Doctors

March 16 - Graduating medical students at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and their peers nationwide, found out today where they will be serving their post-graduate residency training. On “Match Day,” which occurs at exactly noon EDT, a nationally administered computerized system gives the results of the matches it has made between medical students and residency training programs across the country.

March 15 - The advent of the $1000 genome is bringing whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing into clinical medicine. As physicians learn the coding of their patients’ DNA, one crucial issue remains: what findings should, and should not, be shared with those patients?

March 14 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a three-year, $1 million grant from the National Institute of Health’s National Eye Institute to investigate the way in which the energy that supports human vision is metabolized and regulated.

NCAA Funds Concussion Research at Medical College of Wisconsin

March 13 - The NCAA is providing $400,000 to a group of researchers to study the effects of head injuries in both contact and non-contact sports in athletes over the course of their college careers.

Pediatric Musculoskeletal Radiologist Arthur Meyers joins MCW faculty, Children’s Hospital staff

March 13 - Arthur B. Meyers, MD, has been appointed assistant professor of radiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He sees patients at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and at Children’s clinics in New Berlin and Greenfield.

$10 Million Grant to Medical College for Genetic Studies of Common Bleeding Disorder

March 12 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a five-year, $10 million National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Program Project Grant to continue genetic studies that seek to improve the molecular and clinical understanding of Von Willebrand disease (VWD), the most common hereditary bleeding disorder.

Medical College of Wisconsin Researcher Receives Award to Study Spina Bifida

March 9 - Michele Polfuss, PhD, RN, CPNP-AC/PC, a Pediatric Endocrine & Diabetes Nurse Practitioner with the Medical College of Wisconsin, and a researcher with Children’s Research Institute, has received funding from the Spina Bifida Foundation to further her work.

Colonoscopy Prevents Deaths from Colon Cancer

March 8 - For the first time, a new study has shown that removing polyps by colonoscopy not only prevents colorectal cancer from developing, but also prevents deaths from the disease. The collaborative study was led by researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and included researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin and six additional clinical centers.

New Drug May Benefit Patients with Cushing’s Disease

March 7 - A new research study has identified an investigational drug that appears to show clinical benefit to patients with Cushing’s disease. The findings are published in the March 7, 2012 New England Journal of Medicine.

March 7 - Jennifer Knight, MD, has been appointed assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She will see patients at Froedtert Hospital, Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Tosa Center and the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center.

Department of Defense Awards Medical College $1.9 Million Grant to Study Concussion

March 6 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a three-year, $1.9 million grant from the Department of Defense’s U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command (USAMRMC) to determine the most valid, effective screening tool for concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI.)

Medical Students Secure Grant Funding for Free Clinic

March 6 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a $2,800, one-year grant from the Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation to provide patient care at the Saturday Clinic for the Uninsured, a joint venture of the Medical College of Wisconsin and Columbia St. Mary’s.

Medical College Researcher to Study Photodynamic Cancer Therapy

March 5 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $1.2 million grant from the National Institute of Health’s National Cancer Institute to investigate the influence of metabolic and environmental factors on the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy, a unique type of cancer treatment.

Medical College Researcher to Study Regulation of Brain Blood Flow

March 2 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a four-year, $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to investigate the mechanisms that regulate blood flow in the brain in response to changes in blood pressure.

General Surgeon Andrew Kastenmeier joins Medical College faculty and Froedtert Hospital staff

March 1 - Andrew S. Kastenmeier, MD, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery (General Surgery) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He will see patients at Froedtert Hospital.

Neuropathologist Michael Lawlor joins Medical College faculty, Children’s Hospital staff

February 29 - Michael Lawlor, MD, PhD, has been appointed assistant professor of pathology (pediatric pathology) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is director of the pediatric pathology clinical neuromuscular laboratory, which performs pathological diagnosis of all nerve and muscle biopsies performed at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Children’s Research Institute.

Defense Department Awards Grant to Study Treatment of Vibration Injuries

February 28 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a three-year, $700,000 grant from the Department of Defense. The study will investigate the underlying mechanism by which a molecular agent reduces symptoms associated with chronic vibration injury.

Medical College of Wisconsin Unveils “Discovery Curriculum”

February 27 - The Medical College is making major changes to its curriculum, the hallmarks of which will be the earlier integration of patient observation for medical students, a year-long foundational program, and a full year of symptom- and system-based units of education to ensure grounding in the basic sciences.

Medical College Researcher to Study Vascular Anomalies

February 24 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a four-year, $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to investigate the underlying mechanism that generates errors in embryonic vascular development, which can lead to vascular anomalies.

February 23 - Staci Milosavljevic, MD, has been appointed assistant professor of medicine (cardiovascular medicine) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She sees patients at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center.

MCW Youth Violence Prevention Initiative Names Partnership Teams to Reduce Community Violence

February 21 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has named two additional community partnership teams for its Youth Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI). The teams selected for three-year awards are “Ripple Effect Milwaukee: Spreading Peace and Building Communities” and “Safe Schools Healthy Students Lindsay Heights Initiative.” These two programs join two current VPI partners, the Holton Youth and Family Center Collaborative and the United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM) Violence Prevention Initiative.

February 21 - Amit Taneja, MD, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine (Pulmonary and Critical Care) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He sees patients at Froedtert Hospital.

Medical College Researcher to Study Development of Glaucoma

February 20 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute to investigate the mechanisms underlying the development of Axenfeld-Rieger Syndrome, which can lead to glaucoma and other birth defects.

February 17 - Leslie Mortland, MD, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Hematology/Oncology) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She sees patients at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

High-Speed, High-Throughput Fluorescent Probes are Powerful New Research Tools

February 16 - Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin have adapted state-of-the-art fluorescent probes to high-throughput screening of oxidants in biological systems. Oxidants are generated in the body as a result of metabolic reactions, and can attack proteins, lipids, and DNA, leading to the development and progression of a variety of diseases.

Autoinjectors Offer New Option to Treat Prolonged Seizures

February 16 - A new method of drug delivery to stop seizures is faster and may be more effective than traditional methods. A national study conducted through a network of 17 major research centers, including the Medical College of Wisconsin, compared an intravenous drip of a traditional anti-seizure medication, lorazepam, to a similar drug, midazolam, which was delivered by autoinjection.

MCW Trustees authorize exploration of statewide community-based medical education program

February 1 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has begun to explore the development of a statewide community-based medical education program to address Wisconsin’s pending physician shortage. The Medical College’s Board of Trustees authorized the College’s administration to conduct feasibility analyses of placing community-based medical school components in one or more regions throughout Wisconsin.

New Strategies to Lower HIV Risk in Latino Population

January 30 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a two-year, $411,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Mental Health to research new strategies aimed at increasing HIV testing and counseling in new immigrants to the United States.

Anesthesiologist Roger Fons joins Medical College faculty, Children’s Hospital and Froedtert Hospit

January 27 - Roger Fons, MD, has been appointed assistant professor of anesthesiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He will practice at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Froedtert Hospital.

January 26 - The 16th Annual Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Club Run & Walk will be held on Saturday, February 11 at 10 a.m. at Wil-O-Way Recreation Center, 10602 Underwood Parkway in Wauwatosa. Medical College Researcher to Study Brain Connectivity

January 23 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a four-year, $2.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering to study brain connectivity, the means by which signals are conveyed between regions of the brain. With this grant, researchers will develop new technologies in functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (fcMRI).

State Lawmakers and Cancer Advocates Call on State Legislature to Act on Oral Chemotherapy Access

January 16 - MILWAUKEE, WI – Cancer advocates from the Wisconsin Coalition for Cancer Treatment Access (WCCTA) today called on Senate Health Committee Chair Leah Vukmir and Assembly Insurance Committee Chair Kevin Petersen, as well as leaders in both chambers, to hold a public hearing to discuss legislation (S.101 / A.151) to increase patient access to affordable oral chemotherapies. Bill sponsors Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) and Rep. Pat Strachota (R-West Bend) joined the group at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee to urge their colleagues to take up the bills for consideration.

Wisconsin Center for Excellence in Genomics Receives New Round of Funding

January 12 - The Wisconsin Center of Excellence in Genomics Science (CEGS), which brings together collaborative interdisciplinary research teams to develop novel technologies that significantly advance genomic research, has been awarded a $6.2 million grant extension from the National Institutes of Health’s National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). The grant provides an additional two years of funding to the CEGS, which was established in 2009 and is one of only ten Centers of Excellence in Genomics Science supported by NHGRI. The award followed the recommendations of a panel of expert reviewers that evaluated the progress the Center had made during the initial two years.
