Antioxidant Shows Promise in Parkinson’s Disease

June 19 - Diapocynin, a synthetic molecule derived from a naturally occurring compound (apocynin), has been found to protect neurobehavioral function in mice with Parkinson’s Disease symptoms by preventing deficits in motor coordination.

June 13 - Julian E. De Lia, MD, FACOG, FACS, has been appointed professor of obstetrics and gynecology (maternal fetal medicine) at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). He sees patients at Froedtert Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Dr. Christopher Schultz Inducted into American College of Radiology

June 11 - Christopher J. Schultz, MD, professor of radiation oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), and a radiation oncologist at Froedtert Hospital, was inducted as a fellow in the American College of Radiology (ACR) during the organization’s annual meeting in May.

WBCS to Fund Three Breast Cancer Researchers

June 5 - Two researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and an investigator at BloodCenter of Wisconsin’s Blood Research Institute, have received one-year, $50,000 grants from WBCS, Inc., to study breast cancer.

Medical College researcher to study immune cell role in hypertension and kidney disease

June 4 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $1.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to fund an investigation of the role of immune cells in the development of hypertension and kidney disease.

Dr. James Sanders Receives Fulbright Grant

June 3 - James Sanders, MD, MPH, associate professor of family and community medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has received a Fulbright Grant to travel and work in Zambia for one year beginning in August, 2013.

Dr. Kenneth Simons Named to National Resident Matching Program Board of Directors

May 31 - Kenneth B. Simons, MD, associate dean for graduate medical education and accreditation and professor of ophthalmology and pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has been named a board member of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Medical College of Wisconsin First to Offer Full Clinical Genomic Sequencing

May 29 - The Medical College of Wisconsin’s (MCW) Human and Molecular Genetics Center recently became the first in the world to offer complete whole genome sequencing (WGS), from patient consent through the return of clinical results, to patients worldwide.

Dr. Mary Horowitz Inducted into Association of American Physicians

May 21 - Mary Horowitz, MD, MS, Robert A. Predicting Type 1 Diabetes at a Molecular Level

May 2 - The Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Research Institute received a three-year, $857,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to continue to develop an assay shown to detect inflammation linked to the development of Type 1 diabetes (T1D) before patients are symptomatic.

April 26 - A collaborative team of physician-scientists at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Research Institute has developed a new evidence-based, clinical algorithm to help physicians treat complex patients with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD).

Social Networks May Help Slow Spread of HIV

April 26 - The Medical College of Wisconsin’s (MCW) Center for AIDS Intervention Research (CAIR) has received a five-year, $2.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health National Institute of Mental Health to engage social networks of persons living with HIV in the former Soviet Union to support other people who are HIV positive.

April 24 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a four-year, $1.5 million award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health to study the structure and function of enzymes involved in fatty acid oxidation.

MCW’s CAIR to Host Conference on Latino Immigrants’ Experience with Health Care and HIV Services

April 23 - MCW Center for AIDS Intervention Research will present a one-day conference, “Fronteras Y Barreras/Borders and Barriers: Addressing Latino Immigrant Experiences with Health, Healthcare, and HIV in the United States,” Monday, May 13 at the Italian Conference Center in Milwaukee, WI.

President of American Heart Association to Speak at MCW

April 15 - Donna K. Arnett, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., president of the American Heart Association, will present cardiology grand rounds at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Wednesday, April 17, at 8:00 A.M. Dr. Arnett will discuss genomic and environmental factors in hypertension (high blood pressure) and left ventricular hypertrophy, a heart condition often triggered by uncontrolled blood pressure.

MCW skin cancer specialist honored with national award

April 11 - Stefan Schieke, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has received the Medical Dermatology Career Development Award from the Dermatology Foundation. He is the first dermatologist from MCW and one of two faculty members in the U.S. to be selected in this category for the prestigious award of the Dermatology Foundation in 2013.
