  Important notes regarding the data
  • The NIH fiscal year spans October 1 to September 30.
  • The NIH does not classify Mayo Clinic as a School of Medicine (SOM), and therefore Mayo Clinic is not included among SOM rankings.  The Blue Ridge Institute of Medical Research (BRIMR) chooses to add Mayo Clinic to their ranking reports.  MCW reports unaltered and directly downloadable rankings from the NIH, and has done so historically.
  • There are currently two sources for NIH data. Sources and dates of download are indicated on reports.
    1. NIH Awards by Location & Organization
Used for ranking and comparison amongst Schools of Medicine (SOM).
Most recent fiscal year data frozen by the NIH on 12/30/2015.
ARRA data is not available from this source.
Awards that are not coded for SOM are not included in these reports.  MCW has in the past had NIH awards that were not coded SOM: these dollars are not included when comparing to other SOMs yet are included in other reports of MCW totals, where indicated.
    2. NIH RePORTER
      Continuously updated results.
ARRA award data is included, but due to download limitations and the inability to specify Medical Schools only, this source is only used when not comparing SOMs.
  • NIH dollar amounts indicate total expenditures for a fiscal year period and are the sum of both direct and indirect costs for each fiscal year.
  • Reports include tabs for several fiscal years, many going back to 2008.
  • Totals for 2009 and 2010 do not include ARRA awards, except where indicated.
  • R&D contract dollars are not included in reports for FY09 - FY13, except where indicated.
Summary Statements - talking points on MCW's extramural research funding
  • In the federal government’s FY 2015, the College received $85.6 million in NIH funding and ranked 45th among the nation’s 139 medical schools receiving NIH research funding. The Medical College remains in the top third of medical schools receiving NIH funding.
  • Despite an overall decrease in the dollars awarded to Schools of Medicine from FY14 to FY15, MCW realized an increase of over $6M, nearly an 8% increase.  And of the top 50 SOM, only half received an increase in award dollars, and only eleven had a better percentage increase in award dollars
  • Despite an overall decrease in numbers of awards issued to SOM by the NIH, MCW obtained nine more awards in FY15 than in FY14 (from 166 to 175).
  • Among the top 50 Schools of Medicine for NIH FY2015 funding, MCW ranks 8th for dollars per award.
  • In MCW's fiscal year 2015, the College received $138.7 million in total grant awards for research from all funding sources.  More than 3,200 research studies were conducted, including clinical trials.
MCW Success Rates for NIH Research Project Grants (RPGs)

Success rates are calculated for MCW competing reviewed applications for Research Project Grants (RPG*) based on NIH definition of success rate.

Rates are provided for all application types as well as NEW and COMPETING RENEWAL.

MCW vs. NIH Success Rates for FY2006 - FY2014 (PPTX) includes funding through FY2015

Source for MCW applications is eRA Commons; source for NIH success rates
is Table #206 (XLSX) from NIH Data Book. Applications are assigned a fiscal year based
on Budget Start Date.  Applications having one or more submissions for the same
project in the same fiscal year are only counted once. NIH success rates do not include
ARRA applications or awards.  MCW applications and awards may include ARRA.
