Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) Fellowship

The HPB fellowship is a one-year training program for the purpose of advanced clinical and research training in the field of liver, pancreas and biliary surgery (HPB surgery). The fellowship includes training in all aspects of HPB surgery including operative and perioperative management of patients with HPB diseases and clinical HPB research.

There is active participation in weekly morbidity and mortality conferences, as well as the multidisciplinary pancreatico-biliary and hepatic tumor conferences. The fellow will present at our monthly HPB journal club and attend the monthly HPB lecture series. The fellow will rotate on the HPB Surgical Oncology Service and have the option to participate in liver/pancreas transplantation and organ procurement. Fellows will run their respective service under the direction of the HPB teaching attendings. The faculty consists of six surgeons in the Division of Surgical Oncology.

The fellow will give one presentation in the HPB lecture series and may give Grand Rounds on a HPB-related topic. Fellows will be required to design and complete at least two clinical research projects and present their work at local and national meetings. The research component will be directed by the HPB service’s teaching attendings. Bimonthly meetings will be held to discuss ideas, ongoing projects and progress towards meeting these goals. An established clinical database for HPB is supported by fulltime data entry personnel and a tumor bank of tissue samples provides a wealth of research opportunities. Support for national meeting presentations is provided for all accepted presentations. International teleconferencing is also established to exchange information and network with other sites.
