Page W Personnel Cost Calculations

How are the numbers in each field calculated for Page W Personnel Costs?

The Total Requested salary (TotalReq) will be the Salary Requested + Fringe Benefit.

Salary Requested (Req) is Base Salary * Percent Effort * Percent Salary Requested

Base Salary (Base) is defined as the Daily Salary * Sum of Days per Period (See "Base Salary Calculations" for specific examples)

Daily Salary is defined as annual (12 months) salary (or salary cap) divided by days per fiscal year (365 days for non-leap year, and 366 days for a leap year). 

• Example of a non-leap year: Annual Salary = $100,000. Daily Salary = $100,000 /365 days = $273.97 per day. The salary for a given budget period will then be $273.97 multiplied by Sum of Days per Period.
   
• Example of a leap year:  Annual Salary = $100,000.  Daily Salary = $100,000/366 days = $273.22 per day.  The salary for a given budget period will then be $273.22 multiplied by Sum of Days per Period.

Sum of Days per Period is defined as the number of days in that period.

• Example if non-leap year: If the period is 6 months, January 1 through June 30, the sum of days is 31(Jan)+28(Feb)+31(Mar)+30(Apr)+31(May)+30(Jun) = 181 days. If using the Daily salary as in the "non-leap year" example above, the 6 months calculated total is 181 days * $273.97 = $49,588.57.
   
• Example if leap year: If the period is 6 months, January 1 through June 30, the sum of days is 31(Jan)+29(Feb in a leap year)+31(Mar)+30(Apr)+31(May)+30(Jun) = 182 days. If using the Daily salary as in the "leap year" example above, the 6 months calculated total is 182 days * $273.22 = $49,726.04.

Percent Effort (Effort) is the percentage of effort you entered.

Percent Salary Requested (SalReq%) is the percentage amount to be funded by the sponsor.

• Example: If the sponsor is funding 80%, the department will need to cover 20% of the salary costs. The 80% for the "Percent Salary Requested" will be entered.

Fringe Benefit is the Base Salary multiplied by the Fringe Benefit Rate (FB rate).
