M3 Electives - 2 Weeks

Intravenous Placement and Basic Airway Management for Ophthalmological Surgery

Course Director:  Lourdes Bergos, MD

Description:  A rotation for developing skills of IV placement and basic airway management in the operating room of the Froedtert Memorial Hospital Eye Clinic.  The student will also learn to do preoperative evaluations of ophthalmological patients and identify risk factors by taking the patient's history and performing physical examinations, with integrating preoperative laboratory work-up.

Location:  Froedtert Hospital Eye Clinic

Time Commitment:  2 weeks, Mon-Fri, 6:45 am to 5:00 pm, no night call, no weekends

 

                                                                                                                                      

Pre-Anesthesia Evaluation

Course Director:  Ann-Marie Manley, MD

Description:   The focus will be on performing a preoperative history and physical exam, evaluating the patient's current medical status, and assessing the clinical risk profile to help guide the perioperative plan for a high-risk anesthesia case.

Location:  Froedtert Hospital

Time Commitment:  2 weeks, Mon-Fri, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, no night call, no weekends


 

                                                                                                                                      

Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

Course Director:  Suneeta Gollapudy, MD

Description:  The PACU rotation will emphasize on postoperative care of surgical patients.  Students will be introduced to the postoperative phase including pain management, knowledge of fluid management, arrhythmias, renal functions, anaphylaxis, ventilator management, airway management and differential diagnoses of postoperative weakness and somnolence.

Time Commitment:  2 weeks, Mon-Fri, 6:45 am to 5:00 pm, no night call, no weekends

 

                                                                                                                                      

Anesthesia outside the Operating Room

Course Director:  Zafar Iqbal, MD, FCCP

Description:  Students will be introduced to the perioperative care of patients outside the main operating room.  The focus will be on the unique aspects of preoperative care, identifying risk factors, intraoperative procedures, anesthetic management, postoperative care including acute pain management and care of the perioperative patient while in a procedure room setting away from the main OR.

Time Commitment:  2 weeks, Mon-Fri, 6:45 am to 5:00 pm, no night call, no weekends

 

                                                                                                                                      

Preoperative Anesthesia Clinic

Course Director:  Jutta Novalija, MD, PhD

Description:  The students will have the opportunity to refine clinical skills including history taking, physical examination and oral presentation.  A comprehensive and concise preoperative evaluation provides the critical information necessary to develop an appropriate plan of anesthetic management.  The student will have the ability to follow interesting cases on their day of surgery to see how the preoperative planning affects clinical practice.

Introduction to Pain Management Procedures

Course Director:  Hariharan Shankar, MD

Description:  This course will introduce the M3 student to multiple fluoroscopic and non-fluoroscopic guided outpatient pain procedures.  The student will be involved in initial consultations, follow-up visits, and in come cases; performing the procedure(s).  The experience will provide multiple opportunities to learn physical exam skills, specifically exam pertaining to the neck and low back.

Location:  Pain Center of Wauwatosa

Time Commitment:  2 weeks, Mon-Fri, 8:00 am until patients have been seen, no night call, no weekends

 

                                                                                                                                      

 

 

Introduction to Clinical Research

Course Director:  Judith Hudetz, PhD

Description:  Elective will focus on how to conduct clinical research.  Special emphasis on administrative aspects of clinical research and data collection.

Location:  Veterans Affairs Medical Center research laboratories

Time Commitment:  2 weeks, Mon-Fri, 6:45 am to 5:00 pm, weekends as needed per research project
