Anesthetics and Cardiac Signal Transduction

Course Director:  Zeljko Bosnjak, PhD

Description:  The overall objective of our research is to directly investigate the specific effects of volatile anesthetics on cardiac mitochondrial function that leads to anesthetic-induced-preconditioning. We are determined the direct effects of volatile anesthetics on mitochondrial bioenergetics, ion homeostasis and the proteome. In addition, we are characterizing how anesthetics modulate mitochondrial permeability opening.

Location:  MCW, Anesthesia Research Laboratories

Time Commitment:  4 weeks, Mon-Fri, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, no night call, no weekends, 100% laboratory research

Cardioprotection by Volatile Anesthetics

Course Director:  Matthias Riess, MD, PhD

Description:  Introduction to basic science research in Anesthesiology with an emphasis on intracellular mechanisms of cardioprotection against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Location:  MCW, Anesthesia Research Laboratories

Time Commitment:  4 weeks, Mon-Fri, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, no night call, no weekends, 100% laboratory research

Cardioprotection by Volatile Anesthetics

Course Director:  Thomas Ebert, MD, PhD

Description:  The elective is intended to learn how to conduct clinical research and to participate in clinical research in Anesthesiology.  The specific areas of interest are on the vascular effects of anesthetic drugs in a human model, the influence of anesthetic agents on neuro-cognitive function in the morbidly obese and geriatric patient population and on the autonomic effects of sedative doses of anesthetics in volunteers and patients.

Location:  Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Time Commitment:  4 weeks, Mon-Fri, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, no night call, no weekends, 100% laboratory research
