Dr. Hudetz received a M.S. degree in Health Psychology in 2003 and Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology in 2006 from the University of Wisconsin. She joined the MCW Faculty in 2007.
Dr. Hudetz’s research interests include the preservation of mental functions after surgery with general anesthesia. Postoperative delirium and subsequent cognitive dysfunction are common after major surgery and have profound consequences for quality of life. A group of people that may be at risk for postoperative cognitive dysfunction are those with increased age and have a history of alcohol abuse and/or diabetes. These patients may be especially sensitive to the effects of general anesthesia. Presently there is no widely accepted neuroprotectant drug to improve cognitive outcome after surgery. Dr. Hudetz has investigated whether ketamine, with its antioxidatory and antiinflammatory effects, is a promising candidate. It was found that a single dose of ketamine administered during anesthetic induction reduces the incidence of postoperative delirium and cognitive dysfunction one week after cardiac surgery concomitant with a reduction in systemic inflammatory response.
Dr. Hudetz’s additional research interests include how to improve mental functions by relaxation. Relaxation benefits mental and cardiovascular health, helps individuals cope with stress, tension, pain, depression, illness, and may improve recent memory. It has been shown to be associated with significant effects on heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen consumption, electroencephalogram, body temperature, intestinal motility, and hormonal balance. Dr. Hudetz demonstrated that guided imagery, a form of relaxation, improves recent memory, measured by psychological and neuropsychological indices.
