Program Structure

Interdisciplinary Program Curriculum

Student studyingDuring the first two semesters, Ph.D. trainees participate in a core curriculum that integrates molecular, cellular, genetic, and biochemical material. Courses include lectures, problem solving, and discussion sessions that focus on current research problems. Through faculty member interaction and laboratory rotations, students select a dissertation advisor from the large and diverse graduate faculty and, at the end of 18 months, matriculate into one department for advanced training. Advancement to Ph.D. candidacy occurs after successful completion of a qualifying examination and acceptance of a research plan.
