Message from the Acting Director: Purushottam (Prakash) Laud, PhD
The Division of Biostatistics at MCW was founded in 1993 with Dr. John Klein as its Director. He led the Division for twenty years until he passed away suddenly on July 20, 2013 (http://www.mcw.edu/FileLibrary/Groups/Biostatistics/Publicfiles/InMemoryofDrJohnPKlein.pdf). Under his watch, the Division established a new PhD program in Biostatistics and grew from three full time faculty members to eleven. Fifteen students have graduated from the program with doctorates and currently eight are pursuing the degree full time. The faculty are engaged in extensive collaborative research with biomedical scientists across the College and beyond. Their methodological research spans the areas of survival analysis, Bayesian methods, longitudinal models, clinical trials, observational studies, statistical genetics and comparative effectiveness research. Dr. Klein has left the legacy of a strong Biostatistics unit at the College.
On September 1, 2013 Dr. John Meurer, Director of the Institute for Health and Society, appointed me as the Acting Director of the Division. In this role, I see it as my duty to make the transition to new leadership as smooth as possible without losing any ground, especially in the strong areas of the Division – research and graduate education. Along with senior faculty in the Division – Dr. Meijie Zhang and Dr. Brent Logan – I will be assisting Dr. Meurer in a national and international search for a Director to take leadership as early as July 1, 2014.
The Division will also host an International Conference on Survival Analysis in Memory of John P. Klein, June 26-27, 2014. Please look for details in the next few weeks and months as they take shape. I hope you will find this of interest and will participate in the conference.
If I can be of assistance to you in my transitional position, please feel free to contact me by email or telephone.
