Mar 5 - Women for MACC discuss their PastaFest fundraising event on NBC-TV/Channel 4’s “Morning Blend.” The Morning Blend (Today's TMJ4)
Mar. 06 - The MCW Cancer Center 2014 Scientific Retreat will focus on creating connections and partnerships that promote translational research. Cancer biologist Dafna Bar-Sagi, PhD, is the keynote speaker for the event, which will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 6, 2014, at American Serb Hall, 5101 W. Oklahoma Ave., Milwaukee.
Mar. 06 - The 17th Wearable Art Show, organized by the Cedarburg Junior Woman's Club, will be held March 28 and 29 at the Cedarburg Cultural Center, W62 N546 Washington Avenue, Cedarburg. All of the events are open to the public. Proceeds benefit breast cancer education, prevention, research and treatment. To date, this organization has donated $18,500 for breast cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center.
Mar. 05 - By virtue of a unanimous decision from the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT) Executive Committee, Mary Horowitz, MD, MS, was presented with the 2014 ASBMT Lifetime Achievement Award during the ASBMT Awards and Business Meeting on Feb. 28, 2014. Dr. Horowitz is the Robert A. Uihlein, Jr. Chair in Hematologic Research, Professor of Medicine and Chief of Hematology and Oncology. She serves as Chief Scientific Director of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR).
Feb 25 - Urban Milwaukee details the history of the Randy Bryant and Cecilia Gore mansion on Milwaukee’s East Side, built in 1901.
Feb 25 - The 14th annual Ridin’ for Research event will be held March 2 at the Rite-Hite Family YMCA in Brown Deer. Hundreds of cyclists will ride stationary bikes in the event to raise funds for the MCW Cancer Center. WauwatosaNOW
Feb 25 - Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy announced that Allison Ebert, PhD, is one of eight scientists worldwide who will share in $600,000 in basic science research awards to study the disorder. Families of SMA
Feb 25 - Dr. Amy Harker-Murray discusses the advances made in treating metastatic melanoma in a Fox-TV/Channel 6 report on the increased incidence of melanoma among women in their 20s. Fox 6 News
Feb. 25 - Guests of Bergstrom Automotive in Appleton, Wis., had the opportunity this summer to raise money for breast cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin while test driving some unique vehicles. Bergstrom’s annual Drive for a Cure set a record for funds raised in 2013, contributing nearly $56,000 to the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center.
Feb. 25 - Brave souls are invited to plunge into Nagawicka Lake on Saturday, March 8, at 11 a.m., as part of “Ellen’s Icebreaker for Cancer Research.” The event is held in memory of Ellen Smith, a beloved Froedtert Hospital employee who died of gastric cancer last fall at the age of 59.
Feb 18 - A front-page article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that MCW and Aurora Health Care are among Wisconsin health care organizations that support legislation that would require health insurance companies to cover costs for oral chemotherapy medications used in place of infusion therapy. Feb 18 - Dr. Amanda Brandow received the American Society of Hematology’s 2014 Scholar Award. Dr. Brandow will receive $150,000 over a three- year period for her research into sickle cell disease. WauwatosaNOW
