Winter 2014 Request for Applications, Cancer Center Seed Grants

The Cancer Center has launched two new standing review committees to review all Cancer Center seed grants. The Basic Science Seed Grant Review Committee is chaired by Dr. Ravi Misra, and the Clinical Research Seed Grant Review Committee is chaired by Dr. Bruce Campbell. Seed grant applications will be evaluated using the NIH scoring system and Review Committee members will consist of Cancer Center leadership, investigators who serve on NCI review sections, past and future seed grant awardees, and ad hoc members selected for their scientific expertise.

Please note, there is a single application form for all of the mechanisms listed below. Simply check the box on Page 1 of the application to indicate the specific funding mechanism:

  • American Cancer Society Pilot Research Grants
  • Thomas A. and Lorraine M. Rosenberg Award for Translational Cancer Research
  • Independent Research Seed Grant in Breast or Prostate Cancer
  • WBCS Independent Research Seed Grant in Breast or Prostate Cancer - SUPPLEMENTAL AWARD
  • Large Center Grant Pilot Funding - SUPPLEMENTAL AWARD
  • Population Sciences Research Program Seed Grant

Please note: if you wish to apply for two mechanisms, please submit two separate application forms with the appropriate budget documents attached for each application and any other required documentation described in the application form instructions. The two applications should be treated as two separate submissions, and will require the submission of two separate eBridge funding proposals

If you are applying for two different mechanisms, please contact Mike Anello, who can provide support and shortcuts to the process.

Grant Descriptions

American Cancer Society Pilot Research Grants

The American Cancer Society provides seed money for the initiation of promising new projects by junior faculty with the goal of enabling them to compete successfully for national grants. ACS Pilot Research Grants are up to $30,000 for one year. To qualify for an ACS Pilot Research Grant, the PI (a) must be an MCW junior faculty member (Assistant Professor or Instructor) within 6 yrs of first faculty appointment), (b) must not have any current national grant support (K-awards are allowed), and (c) must propose a research project directly relevant to cancer or cancer biology. Applicants must be US citizens, non-national citizens or lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence, and must be a member of the MCW Cancer Center or have a membership application pending at the time of application. Up to 4 awards are planned.  Principal Investigators are only allowed one life-time American Cancer Society Pilot Research Grant Award. Seed grants are an investment in the future of MCW, our programs, and investigators.  An applicant’s employment status with the College must be in good standing, and faculty who have given notice or received a termination notice are not eligible. RFA CODE = ACS PILOT-13B

Thomas A. and Lorraine M. Rosenberg Award for Translational Cancer Research

Made Possible by the Froedtert Hospital Foundation

The Rosenberg Award will support translational cancer research in any type of cancer, but the focus must be on the translation of basic research findings to a clinically relevant setting.  The award is for a total of $80,000 over a two-year period (no more than $40,000/year), and is made possible in collaboration with the Froedtert Hospital Foundation. The Cancer Center anticipates funding one award. The Principal Investigator (PI) must have an MCW faculty appointment (regular or adjunct) and must be a member of the MCW Cancer Center or have a membership application pending at the time of application. MCW Cancer Center members who have already received a Rosenberg Award cannot apply until at least one year after the end date of that award. Seed grants are an investment in the future of MCW, our programs, and investigators.  An applicant’s employment status with the College must be in good standing, and faculty who have given notice or received a termination notice are not eligible. RFA CODE = ROSEN-13

Independent Research Seed Grant in Breast or Prostate Cancer

Funded by WBCS and the State of Wisconsin Tax Check-Off Programs

The Independent Research Seed Grant in Breast or Prostate Cancer supports applications for new projects in basic, translational, and clinical studies. The relevance of the work to breast or prostate cancer must be clearly described in the application. Preliminary data that support the experimental hypothesis or approach should be included in the application. This one-year award is for a total of $100,000 and the Cancer Center anticipates funding up to 3 awards. Basic research projects will be funded by The Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse (WBCS). Translational and clinical research projects will be funded through the State of Wisconsin Tax Check-Off Program for Breast or Prostate Cancer, or other philanthropy sources. The Principal Investigator (PI) must have an MCW faculty appointment (regular or adjunct) and must be a member of the MCW Cancer Center or have a membership application pending at the time of application. Please note that the State of Wisconsin Tax Check-Off Program has a “non-supplanting” requirement. This means that in the event of an award using funds from the State’s Income Tax Check-Off Program, the PI must certify in writing that the funds are not being used to replace any existing research support. MCW Cancer Center members who have already received a grant from WBCS or the State of Wisconsin Tax Check-Off Program may not apply until at least one year after the end date of that award. Seed grants are an investment in the future of MCW, our programs, and investigators.  An applicant’s employment status with the College must be in good standing, and faculty who have given notice or received a termination notice are not eligible. RFA CODE = BST/PST-13

Population Sciences Research Program Seed Grant

The Cancer Center is accepting applications for the Population Sciences Research Program Seed Grant and will fund 1-2 one-year $25,000 awards. The Population Sciences Program aims to improve cancer outcomes and to reduce disparities in outcomes. The Program seeks to fund seed grant projects which will advance these aims in the areas of access, quality and/or comparative effectiveness, as well as implementation science. Preference will be given to Principal Investigators who do not presently hold NIH funding. This call for applications is aimed at building intra-programmatic collaborations that would lead to opportunities to secure extramural funding and promote T3-T4 translational research. To be eligible for this funding opportunity, the Principal Investigator must hold an MCW Faculty appointment and be a member of the Population Sciences Research Program. MCW Cancer Center members who have already received a Population Sciences Research Program Seed Grant may not apply until at least one year after the end date of that award. Seed grants are an investment in the future of MCW, our programs, and investigators.  An applicant’s employment status with the College must be in good standing, and faculty who have given notice or received a termination notice are not eligible.  RFA CODE = POP-13
