High frequency ultrasound imaging of the chick embryo as a model to study intrauterine growth restriction, and to study the developing cardiovascular system using microbubble contrast imaging
I am a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist in Kenosha, WI. I started my academic career when I returned to MCW in 2003, and began a course of study in the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy leading to a Master’s Degree. My Master’s thesis involved high frequency ultrasound imaging of the normal growth and development of the chick embryo (much like the normal human fetus is examined in clinical medicine). My current research interests involve the use of chronic hypoxia in the chick embryo model to better understand intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). I also have developed techniques to better visualize the developing chick cardiovascular system using ultrasound microbubble contrast imaging which may have implications in more precise prenatal diagnosis of birth defects.
In addition, after finishing my Master’s degree I continued to work in the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy teaching in the Clinical Human Anatomy course. During this time I received the Outstanding Medical Student Teacher award in 2007 and 2010 as well as the Marvin Wagner Preceptor Award in 2011. My hope is that I might follow in the footsteps of Dr. Wagner, and continue to teach anatomy for as long as and with as great a dedication as he has.
