Research Area:  Human iPSC’s as a model system to investigate dystrophic cardiomyopathy

I received my Bachelors degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from UW-Milwaukee in 2009. Later, I went on to earn my Master of Health Science degree in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology from Johns Hopkins where I focused my research on current treatment and prevention strategies for Onchocerciasis, a neglected tropical disease. I worked as a clinical microbiologist prior to entering the IDP program where I am now a student in Dr. Strande’s lab. Working in both a clinical setting and a research setting has given me a great appreciation for the translational potential in biomedical research.

The Strande lab aims to investigate the unique pathogenesis of cardiomyopathy in muscular dystrophy. My project focuses on the production of ROS and the loss of the mitochondrial membrane potential in dystrophic cardiomyocytes, as well as identifying potential therapies to protect against these dysfunctions.
