Research Area: Molecular mechanisms governing the development of mammalian midbrain dopamine (mDA) neurons

I received my BS in biology and psychology from Carroll University in the spring of 2012. That summer, I joined the Neuroscience Doctoral Program (NDP) at the Medical College of Wisconsin to begin my graduate education. An interest in neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative disease led me to join the lab of Dr. Milan Joksimovic in the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology & Anatomy. In the Joksimovic Lab, we study the development of midbrain dopamine (mDA) neurons in an attempt to elucidate cellular mechanisms governing this process. A degeneration of mDA neurons is characteristic of Parkinson’s disease (PD); therefore, elucidating mechanisms regulating neurogenesis of these neurons could provide insight into engineering stem cell therapeutics targeted at treating PD. We are currently investigating the role of several signaling pathways in the development of this specific class of neurons.
