Clinical Genetics Advanced Practice Provider Conference

The Clinical Genetics Advanced Practice Provider Conference (CGAPP) hosted by the Medical College of Wisconsin will prepare and advance the Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the field of Genomics and Precision Medicine to equip them to be independent leaders in the delivery of precision health.

CGAPP 2024 will be held Sept. 18-20 in Milwaukee!

CGAPP Information

Background

Background

This conference is specifically designed for the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) working in a clinical Genetics setting (typically within a Genetics division). If you are unsure if this designation applies to you, please email CGAPP@mcw.edu)

CGAPP is not a credentialing course in Genetics, nor is it designed to be a 101 class to understand the basics of Genetics. CGAPP focuses on the APP who provides care for genetic and metabolic patients on a regular basis. Presentations will include advanced topics within Genetics.

We recognize there are other APPs who may order genetic testing or want to know more about basic genetics. This may include APPs working in oncology or neurology services (to name a few). Unfortunately, CGAPP is not appropriate for those individuals currently. Our focus is for the APP truly working in a Genetics division.

The need:
Geneticists are in great demand across the country. According to the National Resident Matching Program, in 2023 only 29% (10 of 35) of Medical Genetics Fellowship programs were filled.  In addition, of the 51 Genetics fellowship positions available, only 21 were filled (41%).  The Medical College of Wisconsin filled our need for Geneticists in 2014 by utilizing the APP’s clinical expertise and integrating them into genetics. However, genetics training is not embedded into standard graduate nursing programs. Currently, nothing exists to train the novice genetics APP and provide continuing education that is relevant to them
